I am very fussy about coffee. I only ever have proper coffe (made from espresso) never instant or even plunger. At work I buy it from one of several of the decent cafes nearby. At home we have a Rancilio Silvia machine and a Rancilio Rocky grinder. The secret to really good coffee is fresh beans, f...

Yarra Ridge Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2005 – It has all the signs of pinosity displaying cherry, a skin of plum, a shake of spice and even a drop of sap, but there’s a bitter green steminess that likes to poke its head around the corner. Still, it’s an honest unassuming drop for ...

Gavin, this is what I do: I do NOTHING for a week. THAN, once a week, I delete all ZERO POSTERS. This way you don't delete legit or active members, regardless of their names. That's great Serge. I am often serching through this forum but according to your criteria I will no longer exist and then ha...

Te Kairanga Martinborough Pinot Noir 2004 – Light but clear red with clay tones. Dry sour cherry, rare roast lamb, and damp hay fields on the nose. Light to mid weight palate of dry herbal nature and dusty, almost sandy tannins. After a day it gains some delicate wild rose. 89/100 $22 Hunger...

The VA really does your head on the nose and then the acid rips into your throat, the two combined simulating nasty alcohol burn. And FWIW, I am high alcohol intollerant and see no problem with criticising wines above 13.5 if they show it. Acid rips into the throat? You've been watching too many ho...

Showing the wine the old black snake (often late at night) apparently happens quite a lot. Maybe you could just chuck blocks of ice in to cool down the ferment too (even after it has stopped). I have no real problem with having water added to wine by the winemaker if it improves the wine. GW Dirty ...

I suspect there are quite a few 16% wolf wines being released under 14.5% sheep labels. Hmmmm... I often find the serving temperature makes a big deal of VA and high acid combinations as well. The VA really does your head on the nose and then the acid rips into your throat, the two combined simulat...

GW, you misunderstood me completely, but it's OK. c) if a wine is described as 'chocolatey' or 'herbal' then it means a great deal to me. what if the note written by somebody who never tasted chocolate? Will it still mean a great deal to you? What the? Why would they say it, you dingbat? And even i...

I have had 3 bottles of the 04 so far; 1 under cork, and 2 under crown seal. The bottle under cork was clean as a whistle, but far inferior to the other two, being green and astringent and not enjoyable. The bottles under crown actually enjoyed a (very) small amount of Brett. I say enjoyed, because...

If you're posting here, then it's a racing certainty that you're a compulsive buyer We've got just short of 250 bottles, but only drink a bottle a week (but up to 3 bottles a week when we're both at home). This makes for that magical 5 year figure at worst, with c. 2 years at best. But the fact is ...

A cooler liquid will absorb more oxygen into solution, but I think the bigger issue is that at the lower temperatures all chemical reactions slow down. I put half finished bottles in the fridge all the time but I do replace the cork, limiting the amount of oxygen exposure. The 375ml bottle is an ev...

05 Colstream Hills Pinot Noir - The cherry red of this is not exactly bright but not dull either (it did get a shake on the way home). The nose is not too far from that of the 04 but with a more shear profile of initial rose bush, cherry, and a lovely dustiness balanced with the fruit. On the palat...

Interesting thought. Why do you think there is greater chance of the wine being faulty at the higher expense? Cheers, Simm Conventional logic says that it should not, but my hip pocket says it does. Thinking about it, I think the reason is the fact that the most expensive bottles I have bought have...

Hi Adair, I voted up to $200. I would pay up to $300 for the 2002. I looks like I am not buying either! Adair And why would you when you can still occassionally get the '96 for around that price at auction. 1) You can not get the 1996 at auction for up to $200. 2) The 2002 might be in the same leagu...

Really do think you should try another bottle now Grinners old chap. No point in keeping even one bottle if you don't like it. It might be that you prefer the Sandleford Element early drinking style at this point of your life, and there will always be great vintages around the corner for you to catc...

02 Sticks Pinot Noir - I think this hales from the Yarra Valley. Good cherry with a foot in the fungus. Yummy for around the $20 (as I was told it cost)with good length. 87/100 More 04 Hoddles Creek PN - Very good for the price but tips the Sticks for fruit but could probably do with some of the fu...

Vinum are definitely machine made. In Sydney, you don't want to be touching the bowl - as in the "O" series. I quite like using them though, but only for novelty value really. I can't imagine myself contemplating/analysing a wine over an evening in such a glass. May I ask for some ingenuity please....
