Quoted by Martin Phillipson: PS While I said I won't get into the debate, I recently had a 2002 Mitolo Jester (McV I know!!) and a 2002 Kaesler Stonehorse (both theoretically early-drinkers) which I found way too sweet and syrupy and hard going to drink more that 1 glass. Complete contrast was a 20...

A person can easily link through a server site and obtain a different IP address - I don't know what these sites are called, but they act as a temporary server through a weblink. Apparently there are dozens to be found nowadays, so you could be blocking IP adresses for a long time just to get rid of...

Here's a thought. I wonder which other wines Mishy had been drinking before the Mamre Brook. Sometimes after drinking French/Italian wines and then Australian/US wines or vice versa, you notice the differences much more. Maybe it's the contrast that's showing. I'm sure if you gave an Italian a glas...

I didn't like the '02 Kaesler Shiraz either.........do a search on winefanatic........I loved the '01 - do another search. It's not just the Grenache-er blends. Your first TN I refered 'origionally" was with with I thought was RB (but it was John) as I first read it.......on your tour diaries..........

I have to agree with Fred's comments; now there's a worry! FWIW, here is my TN. Grant Burge 2002 Filsell Shiraz SA2004 The perfumed, youthful, fruity bouquet was clearly letting the fruit speak and the oak is overt, rather than covert. On the palate, it was no surprise to find the driving force was...

I honestly found this wine almost completely offensive..........but we drank the bottle anyway. It was not because of a flaw per se, it was entirely a style. I hoped it would become more than glop, but it continued to be gloppy.....................I used to love Kaesler until '01, but now they too p...

I just checked with the winery; there was only one batch and there is no difference between the local and export bottles.... except for lableing requirements. I doubted it was a different bottling, and the wine was completely sound.......... but is it so hard to believe I didn't like a wine you and...

My opinion is it's Parkerized and sweet, and I really wanted to like this wine as it's at a price-point for a cellarable wine that I can easily swallow.
But I didn't.......
Thanks for your opinions.

TN: Grant Burge Filsell, Barossa Shiraz 2002

40$C 14% alc Yesterday I picked up an extra bottle (aside from the ones in my cellar) as I was having a friend over who loves Aussie Shiraz. I'm glad I did, as I'm returning my cellared Filsell's after this tasting. This is in the style of those sweet Parkered Shiraz's I dislike so much, and my frie...

TN: De Bortoli GS Yarra Reserve Shiraz 1996

Full nose of dusty red cherry, plummy fruit, black. Soft and silky rich texture, nice oak, and a long serious mature baked fruit and bog decay finish, but something feels lacking. My friend loves it, but I'm not so easily impressed here. Although nicely aged and still in very good condition with ful...

Jester, The Mondavi Reserve is their top wine and quite deservedly so, in spite of all the Mondavi crap that's been flowing around recently. Opus is a completely 'other' venture. The Reserve has held very steadfast in quality so far, but certainly and unfortunately at a very steep price. Give it 10-...

quoted by TORB: FWIW, I agree with most of OliverÂ’s drinking windows now. Some years ago, that was not always the case and thought he was a bit generous but as time went on and I tried more older wines that he predicted a long life for, I realized he was on the money in most cases. That...

My original point was not an attack towards Ric, but an innocent remark in reference to JO's drinking windows, which IMHO are a wee bit too generous for the St. Henri and several other wines in his book. He gives all those St. Henri vintages 20 years, not just the '86 - which has now become the post...

Hi Mishy, I bought a dozen of this after tasting it when it was released. I remember it was fairly expensive at A$35. I have been slowly drinking it over the years and have 3 bottles left. I found the wine to be excellent, quite different from a Shiraz or Cab, due mainly to the high Malbec content ...

Mishy, As far as 20 years for anything other then the '86 is concerned, it's no doubt very debatable. In regard to this point some 90's 91's and 96's and 2002's will go 20 years without question. I'd challenge you both in a taste-off, but it's a long trip to OZ. I fail to understand what this has t...

I define a wine's drinking window as when all its el;ements have integrated (to the extent in some instances that they ever will) and it should commence when there is till some primary fruit present. I'm good with tertiary as a beginning 'drinking window'. Is that out of line ? I only troll for mon...

Adam,
I like fruit and structure in balance, and I prefer the edges shaved off the tannins without sacrificing the fruit for intrusive acid.

Mishy, The critical point here is that the 86 St Henri (good cellaring and corks permitting) still has loads of fresh fruit to support some aged characters. It is far from old and tired. The 91 Petaluma is still improving and has bucket loads of fresh fruit to support it. There are certain complexi...

I think the key here is the word improve, do these wines improve with 10 more years cellaring ? No, I personally don't think so..........and no, I haven't had any St. Henri's over 20 years and I really wouldn't care to. Whether they live without turning into some sort of vinegar solution, well, it's...

Glad to know that you know more about how Oz wines age than Jeremy Oliver. St Henri (in a reasonable year) does not eneter its peak window for 10 years. The 86 is at its peak and not looking like heading south anytime soon. The 91 at 14 years has at least 10 years left in it. As for Petaluma, the t...
