And JO reckons that the 2005 is even better. So much so that he wants the price upped! what from $16.99 to $20? c I doubt there will be any significant price increases soon (although stranger things have happened). Wynns has been the slowest to get back on their feet after the price slashing by Sou...

The 2003 is reasonable at these prices, but the 2004 seems to be getting the rave reviews.

2003 Petaluma Chardonnay – drinking fantastic at the moment, lovely with Crayfish. 2005 Kalleske Old Vine Semillon – good honest Semillon, nice acid, went really well with Indian Food. 2005 Kalleske Old Vine Shiraz – delicious, seriously good wine! Bit pricey for me to stock up...

The St Henri, which seems to be in good condition from your description, is probably better than most vintages of Grange. (In those days, St Henri and Grange were sort of regarded as equals). It's most likely drinking well, but it won't get any better. Drink up with people you love. The Wolf Blass, ...

Mal, get aircon and rely on the boffins to solve the greenhouse effect. Melbourne is near/just hot as Townsville through much of summer and more than sometimes hotter. Maybe that's the reason for the exodus to northern climes in winter where the weather's nicely temperate. There ain't nothin' wrong...

Christmas haul

My Christmas present from my father arrived early, and it felt heavy and unbalanced, something like three bottles of wine. So, I opened it up, and I'm now the proud owner of Noon Vat SC2 Dry Red 1990 Noon Unfiltered Grenache 1991 Grosset Gaia 1995 Any TNs or other useful information? Kieran

Kieran, Kieran, Kieran, where did you find the '89 Mentor? I understand you want to "corner the market" on this one but surely you can leave one bottle in the store. I didn't know they made a Mentor back in the '80s. In Canada all I saw was their regular cabernet and I still have a bottle...

Some 02s - Arakoon Doyen and Hewitson Old Garden - for $20 each.

Rosemount Reserve Cab 94 - $12 each.

PL Mentor 89 - $21 each. I'm trying to corner the market on this one.

Jacob's Creek chardonnay is made for early drinking. If it's not vinegar yet, it still won't be a great wine but might display an interesting honey/fig/toast character. I suggest that when you open it, keep a backup bottle of something else handy.

If Cabernets are kept for longer then they may show up as being more commonly kept in cellars, even if fewer bottles are actually kept and consumed.

Ultimo Wine Centre is probably the best fine wine store. Annandale Cellars and Summer Hill Wine Shop are OK too. I think there are a few decent shops on the north shore too, but I don't often go that way.
