I would still like to come, but my +1 will be interstate, so I will be flying solo. Not sure what I can bring though - don't have an enviable-middle-aged-man cellar to select from, so it will have to be something fresh off the wine-shop shelves. Can I decide closer to the time please?

If Gasman is going, I might have to chicken out  .

Only kidding. I like the Abla's suggestion - flat price of $45 a head to avoid the awkward bill-splitting stage of the evening, delicious food, relaxed and casual, plus no corkage. Pretty central for public transport too.

Except the women:men ratio was not an exaggeration. At one point I looked around the room and commented to my friend that he was the only male. There were about 20 women and 1 man - so technically, the ratio was higher. Thanks, n4sir. I actually check visit the forum every day, but seem to work some...

Actually went to the Supper Club last night. Just dropped in at around 7pm for a glass of wine (Bindi sparkling, $14) and a pre-dinner snack and it was already quite full - no comfy couches left. Yes, the wines are overpriced, especially those served by the glass. The elegant bar-snack equivalents w...

Wizz - viticulture is growing the vines, winemaking is making the wine, oenology is the science of wine and winemaking. The role of a viticulturalist is completely different to that of a winemaker which is completely different to that of an oenologist. They are all related, because they deal with th...

Grey Ghost, You (and DI) have wrongly assumed I am criticising high-alcohol wines. I am not. I am merely pointing out that consumers who pick up a bottle of wine with an X% label and think "Gee, that wine tastes like it has more alcohol than that", may be bloody right! By the way, thank yo...

By using the descriptors "wolf" and "sheep", I was not implying there is a problem with 16% wines...or 14.5% wines for that matter.

I was merely having a play on words, but given the response from the audience, I will save my (attempt at) humour for another time and place.

I suspect there are quite a few 16% wolf wines being released under 14.5% sheep labels.

Remember also there is a +/- 1.5% tolerance for alcohol labelling on wine (still and sparkling) for domestic sale.

So, what you think is a 13% wine, may be up to 14.5% or as low as 11.5%.

Thanks for sharing that great list, sean.

Makes you wonder why people feel the need to spend years studying at university to get a winemaking qualification today, doesn't it? Seems any Tom, Dick or Harriet can do it if they have enough money.

Oh n4sir, you make me blush with such high praise - I wish I did have a samurai-sword wit. By the way, I prefer your old picture. I agree with whoever said drop Fox Creek. Not only was my cellar-door experience there downright unpleasant, the wines get much more attention than they deserve. I would drop Bird in Hand too. Again, wines no good, although I understand the 2006 ones might be a vast improvement. Otherwise, well done...

Gasman, As michaelw pointed out, my comments are my (educated) opinion and I am not claiming them to be anything more. The main point I was making was the skewed relationship between price and quality/reputation - for those wines, I was disappointed for the price being asked and was not willing to p...

Sorry to drag up this post again, but went to a tasting today of Mount Mary 05 whites and 04 reds. I have never tried any MM wines before - bit out of the price range of a student I am afraid! I appreciate that these wines are made for long-term cellaring, so tasting this early is a bit unfair for t...

Craig, you don't need a navy or an air force - won't God Defend New Zealand? :D
