St Peters 99 and Blackjack 01

No tasting notes, just impressions: St Peters - Didn't have a decanter, so poured them into Riedels an hour beforehand. The balance, complexity and long finish of this wine impressed me greatly - could've drunk this all night long if I had more bottles! Blackjack - Enjoyed this, nice fruit which met...

Interestingly, Halliday rates the 2002 vintage in Grampians as a 7, compared to 8 for 2000 and 2001, and 9 for 2003, and nearby regions have 2002 vintages as 8 or 9 out of 10. Wonder how the vineyard by the railway line that is used for St Peters fared during 2002?

Orlando St Hugo 96 Decanted for 1 hour, slight hint of browning at the edges. Nose was more restrained than the bottle I had last winter, this was classic Coonawarra; I love the balance of power and elegance on the palate. The bottle disappeared all to quickly; as it was my last bottle , have to wai...

Mondovino

Saw a great wine documentary on Saturday as part of the French Film Festival in Melbourne. The underlying theme was big, new, modern winemaking vs traditional, older winemaking methods, and it covered issues I knew little about - Robert Mondavi wines, wine consultants, SuperTuscans, terroir, and yes...

Andrew Garrett 1995 Cab Sav - drank this at a friends for dinner. Lovely soft mouthfeel with good length for its 12.5% a/v. No browning yet. Followed with a 2000 Red Rock Shiraz (new winery near Camperdown in SW Victoria) which was a fuller and pleasant drop but a step down from the Andrew Garrett.

Ageing wine

The following article is from today's 'Epicure' section from Melbourne's Age nespaper. Some good basics about about ageing wine, and an interesting Henschke screwcap/cork experiment, and varied points of view from winemakers.

Osickas winery

Osickas winery is a tiny non-irrigated family owned winery which is 30 years old. Think they sell just 2 wines: a yummy shiraz and delicious cab sav. Located in the Greytown area 3 minutes off the Nagambie-Heathcote road, so if visiting Tahbilk and Heathcote wineries you may well be driving (almost)...

Tahbilk's vintage charts

Was reading the latest Tahbilk wine club newslettter which has their vintage chart on the back. I notice that for many of the reds, cellaring of either 15-20 years or 20 years is recommended. Using the standard Cab Sav as an example, one needs to go back to the 1989 before finding one which is liste...
