Re: Paid Cellar Door tastings to become the norm?

Isn't that your own fault though? Partly yes. Certainly can't attribute all of the blame on the retail market. Heck they get (e.g. the big guys) get away with it because they can If you feel you have to be sold at Dans, Thankfully for our brand we do not rely on the wholesale market and as such we ...

but if the tasting experience is good I don't mind the overpay if it isn't too much Is it really an "over pay" if the winery isn't making good margin via the retail / bottle shop stream and have to then pay increased wages and on-costs (e.g wastage etc) and therefore stick to their "...

Re: Paid Cellar Door tastings to become the norm?

Keep in mind that the wine industry is one of very few who give away their products, time, effort and expertise for free in the hope that you will buy something. You can't walk into a - pub, have a middy/pot for free and if you like it buy a Schooner. - restaraunt, have an entree for free, and if yo...

Re: Oldest Pinot and Riesling in Australia ?

Cant see much in the way of old vine Pinot and Riesling though. Does anyone know if there are any really old vineyards out there with these. Mount Pleasant (McWilliam's) in the Hunter Valley has Pinot Noir that dates back to 1921, planted by Maurice O'shea. This block was the source of the famous M...

Last 200 mls in full sized bottle showing lots of oxidation notes That is a fair amount of O2 exposure given you would have poured out other wine etc. Full half bottle in fridge mostly fine. Remember you exposed the wine to O2 while decanting into the bottle. Keeping the bottle full and cool certai...

Melb to Gosford - Say up $30 would probably be reasonable. Would be more if wooden box etc. - $80 for a 6pk. That's a bit rich. If they are being charged that, or say 80% of that and taking 20% as "handling" that makes if $64....they are being ripped off! Postage / shipping costs are high ...

Plenty of use in the late 1960's and plenty in the 1970's before it went off the boil when the screwcap developed a reputation for only being used on cheap stuff. I remember trying a couple of wines from the late 1970's that were under screw cap followed by a great chardonnay from Wollundry Estate u...

Re: Grape harvesting?

The use of machine harvesting is very much variable depending on the wine style that is winemaker/winery is aiming for and the vineyard the fruit is coming from. If the aim is cheap plonk then there is no doubt that it will be by a machine. Not is this just because the harvesting is cheaper (general...

I would think that Bainton's are the recent owners....not long term owners who sold to Rothybury etc Since then it has been owned by the Elliot Family, J.Y. Tulloch & Sons P/L, Len Evans, and more recently by a consortium supplying fruit to Wyndham Estate. A memorable collection of Hunter names,...

Mahmoud Ali, I think you may be correct. The "Brokenback" name, while sharing a name with the Brokenback range which is part of the great dividing rate, is the name of a particular vineyard which was in the past owned by Rothbury Estate. After Rothbury estate was absorbed by what is now Tr...

There was definatley vineyards towards that part of town in the past. When I worked at Penfold's (Magill Estate) I remember seeing photos of vineyards over near the race-course (Morphetville area). If your keen to find out the finer details give the Cellar Door at Magill a call and speak to John Mil...

Re: Legs on the Glass......?????

The more alcohol our residual sugar in the wine will result in more 'legs' as the wine sticks to the glass due to surface tension of the liquid. Does this have any indication on quality....no As for structure...well it could indicate higher alcohol content or more residual sugar. Does this mean bett...

The cost of production (equipment, maintenance, running costs, labour etc) have all sky rocketed in the last decade but the end consumers price has dro...

Don't write us off just yet. Things have been shaping up quite nicely since xmas with some nice warm weather and the odd bit of rain (nothing to worry about). Grapes are looking good and if the weather can stay on our side for the next month then we should see a great vintage for 2011. Fruit has alr...
