Re: Vibration and its impact on wine storage

P.S Electronic kits these days are superb, and sound fabulous in headphones with a bit of extra reverb. Great way to practise without upsetting the wine or the neighbours. Obv you get what you pay for in terms of kick pedal feel etc, but even for under 1K, they're pretty darn impressive. This was t...

Vibration and its impact on wine storage

Hi Guys, It's been years since I posted anything, but I have a question related to vibration and its impact on wine storage. I have a good, well insulated cellar (double block and core filled). It’s fairly close to a room that my son is now using as a drum room (also the same construction) and he’s ...

Re: What was the best surprise you ever found in your cellar

Nothing super exciting, but a couple of weeks ago I found a bottle of 2009 De Iuliis Steven Vineyard Shiraz that I had bought 4 and thought I'd had them all.

Just little things like that happen every now and then.

Nice list!
If you have had one of these recently or are planning to open one soon, I'd be interested to know how it's traveling.

Thanks

Re: How do you arrange your wine?

Not much organization for my wine. I basically have three areas in my cellar. One for drink now / cheap and cheerful, one for medium term / decent wine. One for long term / my best stuff. The long term wine is stored in foam containers stuffed into the back corner of my cellar which is under a concr...

Re: Which wine to cellar for my children?

I was going to do this for my kids too, but unless you have ideal cellaring conditions, I don't think it's worth the gamble (sorry, only my opinion). My cellar is pretty good, but 30yrs is a looong time. I've put away a bunch of wines for my wedding anniversary, but I get to keep track of how they a...

Re: Wine companion annual awards dinner

Who are some of the more 'respected' wine critics going around at the moment? I'm looking for people that are more reserved with their wine scores and not over the top like Halliday. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers I think Halliday is a very respected critic. And deservedly so. We're all ju...

Jokes aside, I find that the various styles of Chardonnay go well with Indian food, different styles for different dishes.

Also Riesling.

Just had another look to see whats on offer.

The Filter wines by column is ridiculous!!!

Regions / Varieties are not in alphabetical order.

Vintages are not in numerical order.

WTF????

Agree, I've checked it out a few times and it's horrible. It would be better if there was an option to go without pictures so you can fit more on the page. I used to like how in the bidding window on the old site you could see pretty much everything at once, with green or purple highlights to show s...

There are lots of opinions on this, like I said I think 13 is good, but you should really do some research yourself so you can make an informed decision.

Read some books: Jancis Robinson's Wine course is a good book to start with.

Re: Wine Cellar Fridge Help !! - IM GOING NUTSSSSSS

It's the expanding and contacting of air inside the bottle, if the temperature change is very gradual (15 all summer and 12 all winter) then this is much better than having it happen rapidly and repeatedly (every day), causing the wine to oxidize and age prematurely.

Re: Wine Cellar Fridge Help !! - IM GOING NUTSSSSSS

Anyway, back to your question. A fluctuation of 3 or 4 degrees daily is a bit of a problem if you are planning to store for 20 or so years.
That much fluctuation over the seasons (ie 15 in summer and 12 in winter) wont matter much at all.

Re: Wine Cellar Fridge Help !! - IM GOING NUTSSSSSS

Id set it at 13 degrees and make sure it's in an area of your house that also has a fairly even temperature so the fridge doesn't have to work too hard to maintain it. Your humidity seems fine, around 60-70 is good. May I ask why you are collecting Grange if you are never going to drink it?? It's th...

I collect to consume, not to sell. I love tracking down a special bottle or buying on release to save for a special occasion. A little way back it took me almost 2yrs to find a 1980 Petaluma Riesling. But boy was it worth it ( and god bless the man who sold it to me). I guess what I enjoy most is dr...

I love vintage port, but have to admit I don't drink a whole lot of it. I think the lean toward half bottles is a good move, they tend to get opened where as the 750mls tend to lay there waiting until I have enough people around to drink a full bottle. I usually take a few to the snow with me and cr...

Probably a couple of PR NV and then: 2002 Noble One 2007 Hospices de Beaune Corton Cuvee Docteur Peste Grand Cru Magnum that I've been holding onto for a bit too long. 2001 d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz. After that I'll probably end up opening some bottles I'll wish I hadn't when I wake up on boxing day.

Hi bigtinnie, Not being funny here, but after reading through this thread it sounds like you should get yourself some vintage port (or vintage fortified Shiraz). If you're after a full-bodied wine that is a spirits replacement then VP is probably worth a try, although keep in mind the alc content is...

Going to Mudgee

Hi Everybody.......
(Hi Dr Nick)

Has anyone stayed or got any info on the Caravan parks in Mudgee?

Any help or recommendation would be awesome.

Also, we'll have the kids with us so will be limited with the number of wineries to visit.
So please recommend your favourites.

Thanks
