C'mon, I know you are- School Night Drinks...

Based on the thread regarding wine consumption, it is evident that alot of us are drinking stuff through the week. What are you imbibing in currently?

I for one, am enjoying a 2002 Coriole Shiraz just for shits and giggles.

What about you guys?

Already posted on the Monday night wine being the Teusner 07 Riebke Shiraz in the Sunday thread. Also had as a night cap a glass of Noon tawny port. Lovely cedar varnishy smells on the palate. Old nose. Palate of freshly dried figs (not the old crystallized version - I am particular) settling into a languorous rancio finish that remains on the breath for minutes. Not sweet at all yet powerful. Tastes like it uses an old brandy spirit which I quite enjoy as opposed to neutral grape spirit. Despite whether you think their wines OTT, if you like fortifieds then you should try this.

Might go well in a blend :twisted:

Josek Chromy Pepik Chardonnay 2007. The 2005's were very good VFM, and perhaps I should put a couple of these away as well (and drink the rest of the case)

Finished off the 2002 Coriole Shiraz tonight (still tasting good, with tannins which has softened, but fruit which has been muted), and moved onto a 2001 Voyager Estate Shiraz. Rich, robust, earthy, spicy wine. A real treat, and good QPR.

I had one the 2005s after I read your mention of them somewhere on here previously (sunday roll call?). At $16 I really enjoyed it. Interesting though that a friend whose palate I also respect found it a little tired. Maybe just different tastes.

As for the title of the thread monghead, the "common" part was what sucked me in! :)

Quite a nice blend last night:

Stonecroft Ruhanui Cabernet / Merlot / Syrah 2001
This was quite enjoyable. Starting to show some age in the palate, but appearance and nose were still quite youthful. What interested me was that the bordeaux and syrah components were both so noticeable in the aroma: pencil box, mint and blackberry showing the cab/merlot and backed by spicy white pepper from the syrah. Palate was still pretty good and fruity, but maybe starting to dry out a tad and showing a bit of heat. I suspect its peaked. I also think I maybe got a slight whiff of plasters under the mint, suggesting it may have just a hint of brett - though it didn't put me off. (Sounds poor from that overly critical note, but it was quite enjoyable!)

2007 Saddleback Pinot Noir- Pleasant enough. Good, but not exciting.

Then finished off the 2001 Voyager Shiraz. Almost exactly the same as yesterday! Did not fade a touch. Will last for many more years me thinks...

Popped the 2008 Hoddles Pinot and have looked at it these last two nights. I like this one a lot. Excellent wine and a dead-set bargain.

Bought the 1994 of this which I think was the first vintage. it was good when I drank it about 3 years ago. Great wines at Stonecroft this year. I went off them for a while after their dismal 1998's which I thought were some of the most disappointing wines of the 20 odd wineries I toured there that year. The cellar door wasnt very friendly either. Good to see a vast improvement!

Had a sniff of the 2007 Saddleback Pinot Noir. Muted fruit, still boring, but now unbalanced, and hot and varnishy on the palate. Thought life's too short, so opened another bottle.

2007 Wantirna Lily Pinot Noir. Now we are cooking with gas!... Lovely vibrant cherries and turkish delight. Hints of jasmine tea and subtle meaty, proscuito/speck-like smokiness. Very nice.

I have been doing spring cleaning down in the cellar and finally located half a dozen of these I knew were lurking somewhere. From your note, it sounds as though there is no rush to finish them off. I was a little concerned because JO suggests in his book they are coming to the end of their window. If there is no hurry then there are a few other wines that require earlier attention.

I was a little concerned because JO suggests in his book they are coming to the end of their window. If there is no hurry then there are a few other wines that require earlier attention.

Definitely no rush mate. Also, these had been stored at the inlaw's "under the stairs stash"- not in purpose built climate controlled, but in a Sydney ground floor double brick home in the Eastern suburbs (reasonable, but in the heat of summer, could reach 25-28 degrees for a couple of days).

Thanks for that. After 3 lousy wines in a row, I definitely need to dig out something worth drinking to remind me why I collect so much. That Chapel Hill was seriously disappointing.
