Keeping Opened Bottles - Aerosol Solutions v. Other Methods

All,

We all drink some nice stuff & like to reliably preserve what we don't drink one night. (Helps our health, too.)

I've started using an aerosol: "Private Preserve", Napa Valley; comprises argon, C02, N2. Said to be inert [economic's my game, not chemstry!] gas that sits below the 02.

So far this seems true to claims: effective preserver, does not affect nose or palate, and inexpensive ($20-$25, I think) and claims >100 doses.

Any experiences with this product, or with other methods suited to domestic applications, to share?

John

being some what of a tight ar$e I use the 375ml or the 187 ml screw cap. I open the bottle, decant into the 375 or 187 screw cap. Fill it to the brim and close and put in the wine fridge. I've found this can keep a young (well balanced) wine up to about 6 days and a old one (10-15years old) for a about one night.

I'm a 'Wine Preserver' user and am quite happy with the results. I get about 5 days out of a 'preserved' bottle. It's very easy to apply, and pour once the preserver is in the bottle.

Keep a couple of empty half bottles with screwcaps around (dessert wine bottles are ideal).

Open up your full bottle, immediately fill the half bottle to the top, seal and throw it in the fridge.

Cheap, easy and simple. The half bottle should be nice and fresh for a couple of days.

I didn't think screwcaps were airtight once they have been cracked?

I have (non-screwcap) 375ml bottles and use corks. I try to leave as little headspace as possible unless the wine is quite young and might benefit from a bit of air overnight.

i definitely use a 440ml grolsh flip top bottle, the one thing i do find slightly annoying at times though is that it is 440ml and not an even 375, meh.

I used to employ a vacu-vin for a while until the stoppers seemed to lose their seal, probably allowed the ingess of more air than if the bottle just had the cork re-inserted upside-down or the cap screwed back on, as I've done for years now. Of course fridge storage is mandatory in NQ. That said, if wanting to keep, particularly, some red wine for more than a couple of days, the refrigerated 375ml bottle solution seems perhaps the best solution.

There was some wine-saving device on The Inventors that seemed at least as plausible as the inert gas thingies. It basically just spread itself over the surface of the wine in the original bottle - forget other details.

Cheers

Currently using a vacu-vin-type system, but finding that wines don't keep for more than 2 days unless refrigerated too. Used to do the 375mL bottle thing, but found that 1/2 bottle per night was just short of a glass, so was pointless to put 150-200mL odd into a half bottle to store...
