I wish they had more at the price but I cleaned them out. I've always been a believer that 1994 is a "Penfolds Vintage". They really nailled it that year compared to most of their peers. The Bin 28 is really drinking well now.

The other thing about this wine is it shows Yanks that cheap shiraz can age well if you buy the right label.

hehe i thought 94 was a henschke vintage

i remember cleaning a supermarket out of $12 1995 Bin 28's. Got 10 or so bottles of it/ Long gone but was a good wine at that price.

A trip to Maygars Hill in the Strathbogie ranges has wiped me out

Nothing for me for some months, except perhaps an occasional case of a good cheapie like the Possums Vineyard McLarenvale (Blewitt Springs) Shiraz 2005, 75% of which I've already swilled. Which reminds me, I asked Judy Press to hold a 2nd case of the cab 07 for me - that's looking like my only purchase this month. I've some impending medical and other expenses that demand reversing the growth trend of the credit card balance.

yep, problem is when i first got into wine i thought there was nothing produced outside AUssie, hence my cellar has enough aussie shiraz and such to last me a lifetime. Balancing things up. I do buy bordeaux, german riesling, alsace, champagne, the odd italian and spanish wine. Have wines from Chile, USA too. My cellar would be about 50% kiwi, i doubt many aussies would have that % aussie.

Anyway, you expect any sane man would buy Penfolds new releases over the class of Te Mata??

Yep, its at least as good as the last 3 vintages. Very plush and classy. A very 'modern' Coleraine

Well possibly the 707 but a very good point. I had an 84 707 last which was superb. They really do age well.

Yip. i have a truckload of 94 707's to last me a lifetime. 707 is just shy of $200 a bottle here now. Just Penfolds wacko territory. I can buy 2007 Coleraine for $59. Need I say more?

Coleraine may not have quite the longevity of a 707 (15-18+ years vs 25-30+) but it has finesse and detail to burn. And really longeivity can be over rated. Just means longer to wait!

Bargains can be expensive, the better the deal the more bottles one buys.

(cellar door day later to above, had my first 05 with my dad the other night, only medium bodied but super concentrated pure fruit, most enjoyable. also bought and quaffed a few the standard shiraz)

Barwang cab sauv 06 x8 (just consumed the last of my last half case buy... after all the fuss, at least 6 of these to make it to the cellar)

will prob buy 3 penfolds 389 06 and 3 of the 407.

then hopefully lie low for little while. will open one or 2 my coonawarra 04s to see how travelling.

Just picked up a couple of bottles each of Kalleske Johann Georg, Castagnier Clos de Vougeot and Bonnes Mares. That's pretty much my budget for the month! (As long as you don't count the 12x2004 St Henri, a mixed doz of Carlisle Zins and Syrah, and mixed 3 bottles of Russian Hills Estate.)

The Johann Georg seems to be one of the few Aussie wines that has increased in price since I bought it last time - was about $100USD, now $135USD.
