wine recommendation/s

Post by Anonymous »

Hi guys
Im a new wine lover :)
I would like to buy some bottles of wine, maybe 3 red and 3 white and store them for many years to only be opened on a special occasion.
I know some wines dont age well. Therefore i was wondering if there was a wine pro out there that could recommend some brands/wines that would be good to store for a decade or 2.
Im unable to invest in hundreds of dollars per bottle so i was hoping that a good wine could still be bought and stored around the $50 mark. If so can you make some recommendations.
Id like to make it special for my family in the years ahead.
Also if some of your recommendations are cheaper to buy online, please advise where the best site is to buy.
Thanks in advance
Regards, Rob

If you have somewhere to store them then I'd go for (that's fairly readily available)

Seppelt St Peters/Benno/Mount Ida
Dalwhinnie Shiraz
Pierro Chardonnay
Mt Pleasant Lovedale Semillon
Petaluma Coonawarra
Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz

Or try auctions or try a few retailers that have old stock. Who shall rename nameless since this is a retailers forum.

hotbmw,

You really do not need to invest a lot of money to buy wine that will cellar well for a period of time. I have purchased many wines between $15-$20 that have cellared for a decade or so beautifully. Listed below are some great value buys ($15-$30) that will last a decade if stored in good conditions (cool dark place where humidity is not too high):

Water Wheel Shiraz (Bendigo)
Leasingham Bin 61 Shiraz (Clare Valley)
Campbells Bobbie Burns Shiraz (Rutherglen)
Richmond Grove Ltd Release Barossa Shiraz
Baileys of Glenrowan 1920's Block Shiraz
The Willows Vineyard Shiraz (Barossa Valley)
Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

My red ideas:

Rippon Pinot Noir
Sandalford Shiraz
Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon (2005 as I'm assuming the 2006 won't be much kop)
Tatler Nonpareil Shiraz
Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz

I don't really have any whites I'm expecting to hang on to for any serious time.

Bob,

The storage is important - you need to have that well sorted if you are going to keep wines 10+ years. Constant 14 degrees, 70% humidity, dark.

Also a simple thing - be sure you like aged wine.

From current release wines I would go for:

05 Penfolds Bin 389
05 Petaluma Coonawarra
Seppelt St Peters 05 is current but the 04 is a better bet - might stretch the $50 limit as well.
04 Yalumba the Signature
05 Voyager Cabernet Merlot could also work but I believe the price has just been substantially hiked
Semillon - The two hunter valey classics - McWilliams Lovedale or Tyrrells Vat 1 will go the distance
Riesling - there will be a few - Leo Buring Leonay, Crawford River, Seppelt Drumborg and even the 08 Clonakilla are good ageing styles

cheers

Andrew

I second the point that you need good storage if you want to keep your wines for 10+ years.

My suggestions:

Reds:
Meerea Park Alexander Munro Shiraz ($60ish)
d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz ($65ish)
Sandalford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($30)

Whites:
Tyrrells Vat 1 Semillon ($40ish)
Mount Pleasant Lovedale Semillon ($60ish)
Leo Buring Leonay Riesling ($35ish)
