Shipping from Europe - Help Needed

Post by Nick »

Hi All

So I find myself in Paris with about 20 bottles of wine, collected from various tastings through Italy. I was only planning on buying a half-dozen or so, but it got a little out of hand. Drinking them now isn't really an option, as they're mostly young Barolos and Barbarescos. The question is, what's the best way to get it back to Australia, bearing in mind safety of wine, tax & shipping costs.

We already have lots of luggage, as we're travelling with our 18-month old, so there's a fair chance we'll cop excess baggage charges if we decide to check them in as luggage.

Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

Cheers
Nick

Whoa, postage is going to be a real killer for ya, my best advice is to have them sent via SEA MAIL (12 weeks) you can also insure the wines if you wish to, Sea Mail is also the cheapest method available but they do have restrictions on weight & every country can be different so keep it in mind, finally dont forget you may have to pay TAXES when they arrive to Aussie :)

Who are you flying with? May be best to approach them re- excess baggage and then be real nice to Customs.

BE careful with shipping. You will need air conditioning which isn't always made available.[/code]

Thanks Guys

Flying Malaysian Airlines Paris (CDG) to KL to ADL. Might get cut some slack with excess baggage due to travelling with infant, but I think we checked five items on the way here!

Temperature control is definitely my concern with shipping. I'm actually in Lyon at present, so might drop into Beaune on the way to Paris, try not to buy more wine & see if one of the retailers there can be of any assistance. Otherwise, it'll be lots of smiles to the Malaysian Airlines counter, then just as many smiles to customs!

Thanks Again, will let you know how it all pans out.

I honestly don't recommend that you take all of those bottles through customs here in Oz, the smiles won't do the trick :)

Import duties and WET in Customs are ~50% of the wine's value.

You are allowed about 3 bottles each so you can bring in 6 between you, but if you go over that, they'll charge the duty on all of them. So if you have 7 bottles they'll charge duty on all 7 (I think that's how it works) :?:
