Pinot Gris

Howdy All,

Several months ago I was introduced to a beautiful 2007 Pinot Gris from a winery called 'Maven' and ever since I have been on a journey trying heaps of Pinot Gris. For me it's the new white wine of the year.

Just for your info, Maven wines are situated in the Marlborough region, www.mavenwines.co.nz. The 2007 Maven Pinot Gris was a full bodied wine with a honeylike flavour, with a pear and apple aroma. The palate was smooth, creamy and delicious.

I have since tasted a few other great quality Pinot Gris, mostly from NZ. These included the 2007 Ocean Eight Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris, 2007 Astrolabe Marlborough Pinot Gris,
2006 Waipara Hills Marlborough Pinot Gris..

Are there any other recommendations of Pinot Gris, both Australian/NZ that are superb.

Try the Ash Grove, Wood Park Whitlands and Whitehaven. Ashgrove Liquorstop has most, if not ask them to get some.

Dry River this year was sublime (but too rare to care) and Mt Difficulty Mansons Farm is yummo too

Herzog has been good in the past though havent tried it this year.

Tried the 07 today at a NZ Winemaker's trade tasting here in Brisbane - didn't enjoy it at all. It was very lacking in varietal distinction.

The 07 Astrolabe was nice, but a little lacking still.. I felt it was almost a faux sweet finish. Would love to see the 08.

yeah herzog can be up and down. about 3 years ago they did a range of whites that was sensational including a stunning pinot gris. the next year ordinary.....

It's a shame beacuse pinot gris is such a nice varietal when it's made well.

I'd say it was white wine of the year about 4-5 years ago.

Either way the Riposte "Stiletto" Adelaide Hills 2007, Peregrine Central Otago 2007, Pizzini King Valley 2008 (Pinot Grigio) and the Paringa Estate 2007 are pretty good.

If you can afford it, try some Pinot Gris' from Alsace, look out for Hugel, Josmeyer, Trimbach, Zind Humbrecht, Leon Beyer, etc. For me Alsace is the home of this grape and they are wonderfully spicy.

I reckon Albarino is new white wine of the year. Try the Fefinane's.

Scorpo (Mornington) and Seppelt Coborra are probably the pace setters locally.
