2000 Moet et Chandon Dom Perignon

2000 Moet et Chandon Dom Perignon – initial waves of yeast dominated the nose but subsided to reveal aromas of almonds, seaweed, vanilla and a hint of spirity-ness (if such a word exists). On the palate, this is certainly more open for business than many of its older brothers were on release. While it has the trademark Dom elegant mouthfeel, it lacks the acid spine that I love in the good & great vintages. That having been said, it has decent length, and it’ll be a toss up in 10 years time whether it or the 98 have peaked first. Save the 95, 96 and 99 for later. To be fair, this is an average Dom at best, but nonetheless, an enjoyable drink.

That is why I prefer the 2000 Grand Vintage instead for much less. It is maybe an even better drink.

Thanks for the note Mike. I'm yet to try the 2000, but I've tried the '98 and '99. I was curious that you slipped the '99 into some of the more elitist vintages; judging from your tasting note of the 2000, it pretty much mirrors what I would come to expect in the '99. In any case, as you say, perhaps not the greatest Doms, but bloody enjoyable drinks nonetheless.

Max, the 99 is certainly not in the same postcode as 82, 85, 88, 90 and 96. But for my tastes its in the group immediately below, alongside the 95. I like it more than others do - perhaps its the appealing citrus notes.

Atilla, can't agree with you on the 2000 GV. I thought it was ordinary to say the least. So much so, it was on sale for 6 months at a dozen or more stores in NY for USD 28, and it didn't move quickly at that price. I bought a couple of cases and ended up giving away a dozen bottles to friends who don't know any better !
Cheers
