WOW! Yalumba Y series and Hill of Grace.

Howdy All,

Just reading the latest Wine House - Newsletter - 19th February 2008. Noticed a very interesting comment regarding the Yalumba Y series and Hill of Grace.

Not tasted either wines, however it appears to be a big call. I am curious now as to what the Yalumba "Y" series tastes like?.

Reminds me of our Grange / JC Reserve 02 Shiraz taste off. Wines, especially blind are often not nearly as far removed as the labels would have us believe...... (or when the tasters are blind for that matter).

Just for my interest I am now out to get some Yalumba "Y", Shiraz, and will do some 'blind' tasting next Saturday night, with some Vayinac friends.

Any idea what years?

The correct spelling is : Official "Vayniac" and as you noted this is Gary Vaynerchuk’s USA term used in his amazing video / podcast wine show which turns 2 today and it makes Gary Ponder what wine goes well with birthday cake?

Or, should that be people who have a better command of Australian English and are more conscious of the correctness of the language in their posts.

There are still illiterates who don't have a clue about the difference between a verb and a noun such as those who think decanter is a verb when in fact it's the term(noun) for the vessel into which wine is decanted(verb), not decantered. That word could be a new word to enter the lexicon that refers to pouring a wine from a decanter into a glass after it has been decanted. Otherwise it would probably be more appropriately used when referring to equestrian activities.

But back on theme, I've not had a Yalumba 'Y' series wine for several years. I think the last was a viognier that didn't impress. Never had a HoG at the price it commands but unless it was too young or one of the less respected vintages......perhaps even then it should've shat all over a $9 Yalumba. Makes one wonder about the palate of the taster/s.

lifting an eyebrow is one thing, slagging other peoples tastes never gets you anywhere. no one person has better taste than another especially when in the context of their own palate.

personally my palate determines what i buy and drink i would think everyone is the same. if one person sees yalumba as tadting simialr to HOG all power to them, it certainly is advantage to their pocket

I did not criticise their choice in wine or even intimate they should not be allowed to drink what ever they want to drink.

Some people have the knowledge, palate and ability to judge the difference between a fine wine and an average wine, and some people just don't care much about wine and think its all much of a muchness.

That's a fact of life, just as some people can appreciate fine art and some people think a painting is just a painting. End of story.

I agree it says a lot more about the tasters than the wine. There is no need to be embarrased by the concept of 'connoisseurship' Craig..it's where the expression 'the finer things in life' springs from.

Had a couple of looks, didn't find anything much of personal relevance, even slim pickings amongst the recipes.

I would like to get some of the drugs he's on though. The guys from wineweek are restrained by comparison.

Maybe I'm showing a (couple of) generation gap(s), but this style of presentation of wine-related info doesn't do anything for me at all.

PS, I've only got one site and it's not reknowned for story-telling or even properly constructed or fully-formed sentences in some cases, I think you mean the other guy, TORB. We are actually different people.

With this as extension to your original comment this makes perfect sense and is a valid argument, and i cant disagree with this on face value.

Now dont get upset, im just playing devils advocate here, dont throw toys but assuming it says more about the person than the wine is really a bit of an off handed assumption.

Has no one here ever had a lowly wine that has performed well against a classic? Have we not seen it time after time in wine shows that 'surprises' suface? Yquem getting a silver medal next to Lindermans P sauternes etc etc??

Arent wine shows judged by so called 'experts' or are they just judged by people who make it their business to consider themselves experts?? i dunno, im just throwing it out there as random thoughts (no smart comments required)....

At the end of the day, a little modesty goes a long way when it comes to subjective matters and that is my main point.

Actually, I think this is a perfect comment, and sums up wine tasting accurately.

If someone told me they liked 'Y" more than HOG I'd say 'Great, go for it', and know that they're gonna have many happy days. That wouldn't change my opinion about how I feel about this, having tasted both these wines of differing vintages. But they're bloody lucky 'cos they'll spend a heap less on wine for the same amount of pleasure.

I don't see this comment as a criticism of the original taster - i.e. I'm well aware that I prefer Bob Campbell's comments on a wine rather than Michael Cooper's but that doesn't make any of us right.
