Mount Mary

Post by Gregoire »

2005 Reds and 2006 Whites just released, mail-order at $100 and $70 respectively.

A bit steep no? Up from $82 and $43 ish.

And a bit sus, right after JM died, after he managed to keep prices in check for so long?

The younger generation being a bit greedy?

Have been a regular for years, but am thinking loooong and hard about whether to bail out.

Waddayall think?

seems par for the course these days.

best to look out for those that seem the best priced in the market for the quality you are after??

mind you we all splash out on occassion, and i tend to be quite loyal to the labels i enjoy though ive been lucky not to have caught on to too many that have gone crazy pricewise.

Gary, :? I would agree, what I normally do in a situation like this is , leave the vintage , and wait till some comes onto the secondary auction market ie www.langtons.com.au

I suspect the fact they have bugger all to sell for the two vintages after this had more impact on the price increase.

I personally think the cabernet the best in Australia but $100 for the pinot is interesting.

cheers

Bit the bullet and sent off my usual order today (a mixed case of all four wines). Think the price rise is probably trying to make up for the next few releases which will be low (no whites next year, and very little reds the following), though not sure if John would have been so aggressive with the rises (particularly for the whites).

I think every wine in the range is exceptional (vintage variation not withstanding), but if the price keeps heading north, will eventually drop the ball.

I for one look at it it in a couple of ways,

Mount Mary, through many years, has given us products of outstanding quality for a sem-premium price. To look for another wine/winery that delivers on the price and quality in Australia is not easy. Don't get me wrong there is a great deal of wineries that can do it, but for consistancy, range and wine making style, it is, in elite company.

Look at in a global perspective; how much would you pay for a French Grand Cru, that year in year out, has delivered a wine that's highly in demand.

To say, that they are making up for their lost production this year by increasing their prices for their current vintage, is a touch far fetched.

Mount Mary are primary produces, that deliver the highest quality of product, should they not be dually compensated for CPI, petrol/freight, labour wage and water price increases.

Question; what winery in Australia, makes all the styles that Mount Mary does at their excellent level? Name a French winery that does Chardonnay, Cabernet Blend and Pinot Noir that consistantly?

I have bought all my allocation already and I am quite happy to pay the money. You pay for quality. How much was Penfolds Grange 20 years ago? How much is it now?

Cheers, Wine Bloke
