Cost: about $50 all up per person food/byo as we will do the $40 menu
Theme: 98 or older: Australia v the world (02 or older for whites if needed).

Wow Carl,

Well done mate, that's out of control. You sound more keen than I am, and I didn't think that was possible when it came to eating, drinking (good red of course), and being merry.

What do i need to bring and how much do they usually cost?

Well, it will take place at a BYO restaurant. People turn up and bring wine. Usually a bottle each. Sometimes there is a theme but in Perth it seems that it is quite eclectic.

Most bring wine that impresses or at least interests/stumps in the options game (did I say we can mask some of the wines?). Last offline on the other forum for instance I brought a 2003 Bannockburn Chardonnay and my partner a 2001 Brunel Chateneauf du Pape. Both about $40 - $60 give or take I suppose, more importantly was the wines we chose were wines that we were impressed with previously.

Other costs depends on the restaurant. I think this should be inclusive so I think the restaurant would be about $50 per head (food/corkage).

Some places to mention are Gavino's (Italian) in Subiaco and Restaurant K (Japanese Fusion) in Northbridge. Both previous hosts to offlines. Another left field suggestion is the Great Mellie in Fremantle. Just opened and very good classic french bistro.

Would be good to have you along.

Seems two people can't make the 10th. Monghead, are you free on Friday the 2nd of November? If so we can make it then, otherwise we may as well stick with the 10th. If anyone else can't make the 2nd let us know as well.

Hi all,

Nov 2nd is good for me and the wife. However, Nov 3rd is not good as will be in Margaret River.

Are Perth offlines like Adelaide ones with average of 2 bottles per person? If so, may need to send some wine to perth prior to arrival!!!

Have been busy at work at the moment so not much time spent on here.

Seems that although Saturday is preferred to Friday in general, more people are able to make the 2nd this time round so lets make it then.

Now how about some restaurant suggestions eh? Somewhere BYO and central. Gavino's again? K's again? Something new? :shock:

Let's have a restaurant picked by the end of the week and some idea of numbers :)

1 per head is fine (it always winds up more somehow despite the suggestion)

Most of my cellar is at my parents' place in Sydney but I think I could scrounge something up.

Suggestion for the restaurant is Nine Fine Food in North Perth at the moment. Shall find out set menu options tonight.

Anyone else have restaurant or theme suggestions?

Paullie, is there a reason for no cabernets for the 1898 :wink: or older theme?

In terms of wines, would 1500ml of a single wine be better for all of us to have a decent glass each, or would 750ml of two different wines be preferable so as to be able to taste more, but smaller portions?

Numbers look to be about 10 to 15 at this stage so either way really. Over 15 and magnums are a good bet.

As for theme I think that there should be enough varieties that you can avoid the cabernets Paullie :) As far as years go I was thinking that it might be difficult finding older bubbles and some whites show better young.

How about 2, 4, 6, 8 - who do we appreciate (Oz v the world)

i.e.

bubblies - min. 2 years
whites - min. 4 years
reds - min. 6 years
fortifieds - min. 8 years

might make it easier for some to source and should still be drinking well. If too finicky we can stick with 98-earlier (Oz v the world)

Restaurant-wise we have the following options so far

Nine fine food (Japanese fusion) - $60, $3.50/person corkage omakase menu. yet to get details on the food but they promised an email.
Pro - central
Against - expensive

K's Restaurant (Japanese Fusion) - $45 to $55 set menus (can't remember BYO charge)

Pro - did a good job, central
Against - been there before

Gavino's (Italian) - $50 set menu on website $5/bottle (also have a $40 menu that is quite similar that looks better value but can't get it off the website for some reason)

Entr�e: Choice of
Field mushroom and king prawns in chili oil and garlic
Cream of asparagus soup
A smooth veal terrine
Ocean trout gravlax
Mains: Choice of
Veal mignon served with a marsala and porcini sauce
Linguine Mafiasa: scallops & prawns simmered in vermouth and cream sauce tossed with spinach and linguine
Grilled fish of the day
Bistecca al Pepe: a filet steak grilled to your liking, served with a creamy green-peppercorn sauce
Main courses served with salad and vegetables


Desserts: Choice of
Tartufo; Italian chocolate ice cream
Warm sticky date pudding served with lashings of butterscotch sauce and delectable vanilla bean ice-cream
OR Coffee or tea served with chocolate and biscotti

Pro - central, did a good job
Against - been there before

Great Mellie (French bistro) $38 set menu ($5/bottle but may be able to change to a per person charge)

Said they can arrange a menu to suit but last night the set menu was

Entree - Warm Potato terrine with cheese and bacon served with salad with chive and shallot vinigarette

Main - Rack of lamb served with (didn't write it down but vegetables of some kind)

Dessert - Homemade chocolate tart and homemade vanilla bean icecream

Coffee included

Pro - Good food for the wines (I've been there before and had a great steak as well as duck confit), Great value!

Against - Fremantle (high st)


OK guys. Any more suggestions or preferences? Mine is Great Mellie but it IS in fremantle. Second preference would be trying out Gavino's with the new owners.

Thought it would be good to get some different styles, and it would also show the variety of peoples cellars a bit.

Sandrino in fremantle is great, close to the cafe strip and not far from the train station , mind you the trains stop running about midnight :cry: Just let us know when and where and will see you there

Hello all,

Nice to see things rolling along.

How far is Fremantle from west perth, and more importantly, roughly how much for the cab ride???

The menu of Great Mellie sounds more apetizing...

As to wines... I'm thinking a couple of bottles of 97 Petaluma coonawarra, 96 Chateau Leoville Poyferre, or a magnum of 98 Eileen Hardy... What do you guys think???

i might bring along a bottle of greenock creek creek block 99 and maybe a bottle of willow bridge black dog from 2001 or a magnum of 97 wynns michael really depends on where we eat a bit as to what to bring. Older than this :wink: Please just pick a spot to Feast and monghead $30 for a taxi to freo ,
