I was at a dinner on Saturday night with a couple of winemakers, and was opening a few bottles of wine with the corkscrew. I noticed on the corkscrew, on the arm that levers out the cork, that there is a cross-shaped hole on both sides of the lever arm (go and grab a standard corkscrew to see what I mean). I've wondered for years what this cross shaped hole is there for, so put it out to everyone at the dinner. Noone knew. So, we all started texting other wine industry people to find the answer, but still noone had an answer. We are all stumped.
Anyone have any ideas???
Absolute Corker of a Question.......calling all wine-heads
Well a quick survey of our house corkscrews reveals that only one out of four have said UFO-profiled hole. The others are pristine lever arms, unsullied by such a meaningless piece of ornamentation... which is what I'm guessing it is???
Cheers

Had a look at the 27 corkscrews in my drawer, none of the newer double levered types have it, under half of the single lever types have the cross.
I know exactly what it's for - like the 2007 league ladder hanging in the Richmond footy club - useless ornamentation
