Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz 2004

Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz 2004
Popped this in the decanter about 10:30 to be ready for the ANZAC day footy telecast and at this time the nose leapt from the bottle exhibiting enticing notes of vanilla, raspberry and floral aromas.
When it came time to drink the bouquet had developed showing lavender, a touch of apricot, sweet raspberries akin to redskin lollies, aniseed, mocha, a hint of dried herbs and maybe a crack of pepper too. Every time you put your nose back into the glass you came away with something different – excitingly exotic stuff.
The first thing you notice when drinking this wine is its amazing texture and mouthfeel. It is fantastically silky and supple sliding across the palate. It makes you constantly wanting to take another sip. The palate has an amazing depth of generous fruit but with superb balance. Blackberry and raspberries with chocolate open the palate and carry through to the finish. There is also a little dark plum fruit to the wine too. Beyond the fantastic fruit purity there is an aspect of complexity too as the wine shows elements of pepper, an earthiness and minerality, touches of aniseed and a shake of spice. Silky tannins draw the wine through a long finish.
This was an outstanding Shiraz that brought me back to the glass with interest every time. This wine will age but it is amazingly good now with its amazing concentration and fruit purity.
A superb example of top-end old vine Barossa Shiraz.
95/100

Huh, you've gotta get over West Coast in the Preliminary final first !
Another wasted year coming up for the Adelaide Cows, I mean Crows and the Premiership window closes a little more!

Still sulking over Saturday night's win over the Swannies Steve?
How about some more AFC Mark Bickley port to help drown your sorrows?
Forget about goodness and mercy, they're gone.

So how did it go? Did you squirrel it away for yourself or were you forced to share it?
Does anyone know when the 2005 is due for release? And the 2005 Old Vine Grenache which I rate (previous vintages) as the pinnacle of Grenache?
I like them young, I like them old but most of all I like them bold

I do -
Available from your favourite retailer (and of course by this I mean me!) as of this Thursday, May 10th!
In fact, Troy Kalleske was just here a short time ago, and he thinks the 2005 is the best Johann yet. I've tried it, and its hard to argue, brilliant wine!
I will also have stocks of his newest wine then also, his first ever Vintage Port. Fantastic package, and a great wine, all that beautiful Greenock Shiraz, fortified, and all simmering together, yum!
regards

Troy made some of this earlier but more of a family only VP. We tried this in 2003 or 2004 when we visited his shed. Looks like he got serious.

Yes
but only two or three barrels serious, so stocks will be tight.
Fantastic bottle, small, unique, round, like a small expensive Bourbon bottle, looks great, tastes great.

What did you think of the 99 BP? The last I had was looking very good.

Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?
'99 Basket Press
I really enjoyed this wine. Aromas of plum, chocolate and berries. Palate well balanced and smooth with plum and red berries, slight pepper.

Yeah, I didn't take notes but from memory I got plums as well and pepper which was unusual for a Barossa wine in my experience. Cooler year perhaps. I also got a bit of Tar that I associate with old vine barossa shiraz. The other thing I noticed was the structure. Was elegant and seamless and I personally think it will last almost as long as the 98 and remain the elegant member of the Odd Couple
I guess I am regretting my decision not to take my full allocation that year
cheers

DavidL,
I don't buy too much wine over $60 per bottle but the Johann Georg is a definite exception, especially for the 04 and 05 vintages. I think the wine easily matches the quality of Torbrecks top Shiraz, top Penfolds such as RWT and other cult Barossa Shiraz but at a better price.
My recommendation would be buy if you enjoy top Barossa Shiraz.
Cheers,
Jordan
