Hi all,
Tried a bottle of this in the eighties and recall it being right up there with the best we'd had at the time. Can't remember the vintage. I was having a look at Langtons today and noted the 1996 go for between $240-300 at auction, but the 2003 goes for btn $800-1000. WineSearcher notes a bottle for around $800 as does cellartracker.com.
Parker notes 1996 as an extraordinary year in Pauillac and 2003 as a lesser vintage but outstanding nonetheless. The 1996 seems to rate around same scores as the 2003 in the reviews I have seen. Why is the 1996 Lafite selling so reasonably at auction compared to the 2003?
Regards,
Allan

Allan, don't know where you got $240-300 for 96 Lafite coz last price paid in 2007 was $900 at Langtons irrespective of what range is.
2003 Lafite is a 100pointer hence the price I suspect.
Bottom line is the 03 is currently cheaper ($783 last price for 03 lafite in 2007).

2003 Lafite is the best of the 4 2003 Firsts ive tried (havent tried the Latour). However I struggled a bit with the 2003's. They arent as good as the 2000s thats for sure and the prices being asked of them maybe make them one of the worst bang for buck vintages ever?
The only 03 I bought was langoa barton, and I dont regret not buying anything else.
1996 a much better prospect. They seem to be getting better and better write ups and prices compared to some of the noughties vintages appear saintly. I remember the revolt against the 95/96 prices, but now they seem pretty good even!!

Craig,
I cant agree with you, especially for Pauillac & St Julien 03s. Now that they're starting to settle down, I think many will turn out better than their siblings from 2000 (and they currently sell for much less here). Try the 03 Latour if you get a chance, its mind blowingly good. OTOH, the 03's from Pomerol are not a patch on their 00 counterparts.
