Guess the Wine - wk begin 5/6

Post by Andrew Jordan »

Ok ... this is getting harder than I thought. :?

But let's try once more. If you guys (Maximus) can Google this then I give up!

This weeks wine (part II), and hopefully Google proof:

TASTING NOTE 1
"Deep purple-red ... lusciously ripe and powerful black fruits/blackberry/blackcurrant fruit ... powerful lingering tannins ... oak absorbed".

TASTING NOTE 2
" ... heavyweight, tannic ... luscious flesh of black, intense, mulberry ... the smoky swirl of oak ... drenched in sweet rich chocolate ... minted blackcurrant, and the bright lift of red ripe plums. It’s a strong, tannic, concentrated beast, and in its style it’s a terrific drop.".

I have provided a few options in a couple of the categories.

Country - Australia
State - Vic/Nsw/Sa
Region -
Varietial - Shiraz/Cabernet/Cabernet-Shiraz
Year - 1998/2000/2002
Winery -
Name of Wine -

Have fun. Will reveal State tomorrow.

WINNER LEADERBOARD - YEAR
1 win - Maximus, SueNZ

RULES
Each week 1 or more tasting notes from published wine critics will be given (that will remain anonymous) that all refer to the same wine. It is then up to the Forum to try and guess what the wine is. Points will be given to each Forum member that guess the correct answer about the wine before it is revealed. The categories that will attract points for the right answers are the following:

Country - Will always be Australia (no points awarded)
State - 2 points
Region - 2 points
Varietial - 3 points
Year - 4 points
Winery - 5 points
Name of Wine - 1 point

Guess the Reviewer - 1 point for each correct guess

Everyday one/two categories will be revealed, which will then allow each Forum member to change their guesses for the remaining categories if they want to. This will continue each day until the wine is revealed. The winner is the person with the most points at the end of the week. Unfortunately, there are no prizes, just a chance to show off your wine guessing prowess on the WWW.

Obviously I'm late to the game - time zones don't help. As soon as I read the TNs, 2002 WOMS stood out to me as well.....

Kaesler Barossa Valley W.O.M.S. Shiraz Cabernet 2002

I suggest you use TN's from people that don't have online databases, like White, White, Hooke, etc.
Cheers,

CR

Or people could just guess based on the notes, without searching - It is more fun having a blind guess - it is not as if you win anything

I obviously missed something here. I'm late to the thread, it is Thursday, and region hasn't been revealed.
So was it the Kaesler WOMS - which I had to look up to find meant Weapon of Mass Destruction - to someone's liver no doubt?
LOL.
I couldn't find it on Google, for what it is worth, and I don't have Oliver's and Mattinson's online databases. Though I would have gone SA with those options and those notes.

Yeah - you're right, I got it wrong. Never seen or tasted the wine. Don't even know if it comes to NZ. But I am sure it is seductive.

Apologies to the crew.

Sue,

Yes, it comes into New Zealand. I sourced half a dozen for myself last year, and I was greedy. I only have two left. I had to show it off to all the Aussies that came over to visit me. Last I heard there were only a couple of loose bottles floating around. Brought in by Hancocks. Let me know if you want some tracked down. It's a superb wine. Contrary to the tasting notes of this thread (if in fact it was the WOMS), I wouldn't have called it a tannic wine. I think it sells circa $60-$70 over here.

Cheers,
Max

Thanks Maximus,
Now I remember Glengary is the agent for Kaesler. Maybe they will have it for tasting at their next road show, if I get invited.
Everyone is saying this WOMS is a Shiraz-Cab, yet the option is Cabernet-Shiraz !!
I looked up the Kaesler website and they don't actually say what the blend is. In fact they don't say much at all.
Cheers,
Sue
