Hi Guys,

I have been MIA for a while due to new job and new baby but I have had to return as my wine stocks are diminishing rapidly. The budget is still tight so am after your latest top value wines (preferably under $20.00).

I have still got some Majella Musicians and Heartlands and thought these were terrific. If you guys can't suggest anything else to try then I can, at least, get some more of these.

Here's a couple under 20 that are pretty nice, not sure if you intend to cellar for a while or drink now, anyway;

2004 (I think) Charles Cimiky Trumps Shiraz - Very sexy little drink around $16-17.

2003 Mount Langi Ghiran Billi Billi Shiraz Think you can get it for under $14.

2003 Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon Under $20 would be better with a few years cellaring.

2004 Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz Same as the Wynns

2003/4 Thorn Clarke Shotfire Ridge Quartage Bordeaux Blend. Bloody nice but needs a vigorous decant. Around $18-19.

2005 Tulloch Verdelho A little out of left field but a nice change to all those Sauv Blanc/ Sem SB's. $12-13.

Just a few that I have enjoyed lately.

2004 Pepperjack Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is bloody terrific, and often available around the traps for around $15. Check out the review on Winorama for tasting note.

As mentioned above the Thorn Clarke Quartage both just under $20 bucks

Hugo Shiraz and Shottesbrook Shiraz are generally good solid McLaren Vale reds around $17. Current vintage I'd probably lean towards the Hugo.

Elvis, I tried this with high expectations after enjoying the 2002 vintage, but found it too simple and cloyingly sweet in comparison to that vintage, very disappointing.

There are so many good reds around in the under $20 bracket at present, many from the 2004 vintage, it's a sign of the times I guess, we should enjoy it while it lasts. Some of them will even cellar for 5 years or more if you want.

I bought some Richmond Grove Barossa Reserve Shiraz 2001 for $12.50 on the weekend.

Sensational value for a wine that is drinking well now but will still last a few years.

I tried it without any expectations, certainly not the 2002 to compare against. I quite enjoyed it for a quaffer. Makes me want to go and try the 2002 though.

You are right about about so many good reds out there for under $20. Drink em while you got em.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I will be going shopping tomorrow for some of this stuff.

However, if in doubt, would you say it is pretty safe to go with any Shiraz from the Barossa from the 04 vintage? Are there safer bets?

I've been guzzling Jip Jip Rocks Shiraz 2004 and Bremerton Selkirk Shiraz 2003. The Bremerton is a pretty smart find for under $20 (NZ).

Another vote for the Bremerton Selkirk shiraz 2003, and also for the Annies Lane Shiraz 2004, tried last night. If you liked the Annies Lane 03, you will like the 04 as thay seem to be very similar if my palate memory is accurate. It is rich, ripe and with a fair swag of oak, the latter possibly a little better integrated than the 03. Easy to drink now, and very good value at around $11. In screw cap.
