Any footie fans here?
I'm taking off early today @ work to watch the Socceroos overcoming the 0-1 deflicit to qualify for WC for the 1st time in history. Can the talismatic Hiddink weaves his magic once again?
I'm banging on Viduka, Kewell, Cahill and gang to give the Uraguan a trashing.

Too young to realise...
Judging fr the lacklustre response, how do soccer rank against others fr the sport(arm chair)loving OZzies?

Umm, why not save time and just have 5 penalty kicks each right at the start. It would save about 2 hours per game and I reckon you could hold the entire world cup in an afternoon.

Davo,
you have to admit it was a thrilling game though!!

Yep, I watched the last 2 min of extra time and the the last 9 kicks. The penalty shootout was particularly enthralling, especially the ample skills demonstrated by M Viduka and the pure arse of the Oz keeper.
Mind you, the other bloke did seem a bit keen to dive left (up until Viduka).
What a funny game it is, and I don't mean comedic.
210 minutes of play for 2 goals. Reminds me of the Wobblies sorta

Davo,
Why bother with fishing?

Ah Martin, if I only caught 2 fish every 4 hours I would probably give it away.
I feel very happy for the boys making the Cup finals but have to say I am totally underwhelmed by the sport itself.

I'm not generally an avid viewer or supporter of soccer but I thought it was a terrific night of entertainment. Unlike Davo, I think the low scoring added to the viewing. It forced me to be on the edge of my seat all night. In other, high scoring sports, you often know the result well before the end of the game. At least this way, the theatre remained for the entire 210 minutes of both legs. I guess if you only watched the last two minutes of extra time and the penalty shoot out then you wouldn't really appreciate that.
Admittedly I would have preferred for the match to be decided in normal/extra time and not gone to penalties but such is life.
Well done to the boys. I look forward to watching them run around in Germany (even if they do get smashed).
Cheers,
Andrew

It was GOLD, all GOLD! to use a term from another branch of football.
Great game and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Unaustralian not to be really. And I'm sure I wasn't the only one with a tear in their eye at the end.
Magic stuff.

I'm still horse from the shouting this morning. Watched it at my brother's place and my young nephew's now know some new and rather unfortunate descriptors...for Uruguayan players and referees

Fantastic result! Mark Schwarzer really showed his class not just in this game but also in the away leg in Montovideo where he made some crucial stops!
Inspired me to put pen to paper - or fingers to keyboard to be more exact - and write about the win from the point of view of Europeans like myself who played the sport in a country that was once not very open to the game!

This will probably form the crux of my next lifestyle column for the newspaper I write for...
