Hi all,
Well some mates and i got together a week or so back to drink some booze and eat some food. Our host decided that Spanish would be the flavour of the night. Jamon, chorizo, olives and some crazy Spanish cheese, oh yeah, and half a dozen red wine...an excellent time was had.
Anyway, here we go:
Palacios Remondo
2001 Herencia Remondo La Montesa Rioja
Bright purple-red; light fruit, red sour cherries and aniseed. Sweet fruit and some alcohol sweetness, slightly medicinal. Finished quite short.
Cosme Palacio Y Hermanos
2002 Cosecha Rioja
Purple-red; plums and lifted spice on the nose. Sweet fruit, but very savoury oak characters, turns a little bit menthol. A very well balanced wine that finishes with very fine tannins and good length.
Ebano
2001 Ribera del Duero – Crianza
Dark purple; super plummy, dark fruit and spicy oak aromas. The oak dominates, with the fruit taking a back seat followed by a long persistent finish and slightly rough tannins. 5 years should help this one.
Dolium (Argentina)
2001 Tempranillo (Mendoza)
Mid purple, masses of sweet, alcohol laced fruit, spice and tannins. Definitely overshadowed by the other wines.
La Rioja Alta S.A
1994 Rioja Gran Riserva
Brick red; lifted floral aromas, particularly violets and a touch of leather and oak. Very savoury palate, dusty and spicy, all-spice perhaps with persistent oak and a long finish. Extremely well balanced, drinking perfectly right now. Wine of the night.
Marqés de Caceres
1995 Rioja Riserva
Brick red; again floral aromas but fading, very savoury, seams to be drying out, finishing with dusty vanillin oak. Probably just past its best.
