Guests...why not log in?

Makes it so much easier to calibrate palates, understand context etc...
Its a simple registration.
Just had to say it....

I agree totally and have made my thought known about this to Gavin for some time. A few points to consider; firstly this is the only wine forum I know of that does not require registration. At one time very few of them did but they now all the see the positive side of registration.
Dead right about the palate calibration point too and that's an important one.
With a number of people all using the Guest moniker, you have no consistency of position of of information.
What do genuine posters have to hide? On many other forums even well known identies don't have a problem with posting underthier real name, let alone registering.
Finally, a registration process will reduce the drive by stirrers - and they are a waste of space.

Ric,
You must have 'auto-login' set for so many forums you've forgotton which do and which don't!
The big exception, other than here, is WLDG. Yes, they like you to use a name, but there's no actual registration procedure.
There's no reason why 'Guests' here can't type a name - it's much easier to follow when there are several 'guests' at once ont he same thread.

Absolutely fully agree.
Registration is simple and then at least we know who you are by name and where you're located.
It really is frustrating as a reader when a topic can have a stack of posts by Guest, you don't know if they are different people or just the same person. Gavin can tell very simply of course by checking the IP address, as he has done many times in the past to kill SPAM etc where one person keeps posting pretending they are different people to pump up or put down a wine/issue.
As a minimum, do the forum readers the courtesy of typing a few more characters in the box to say who you are even if you don't register.

People can register under a Nom de plume....just helps track who thinks/drinks/likes what.

What about having the IP address from which each post was posted underneath the Joined, Posts and Location information of the poster?
Just a thought. At least we could track which guest was which.

A tricky one for me. I've seriously toyed with the idea of registered members only.
But there are many regulars who, for reasons of their own, do not register.
Examples being Campbell from Wine Front Monthly, Gary W and some others from Wine Star Forum and some more.
I'd rather not exclude contributions from valued opinions like these, hence I've never barred guests from.
Open to suggestions and opinions, nothing is fixed in stone.

Gavin,
Campbell, Murray, GW and Lincoln all post under their own names, as do many of the winemakers like that hairy fella from Marius who always brings crap wine to off-lines, .... whats his name? .... fish somthing or other
; and so does Rolf Binder, Noel from Magpie, and so the list goes on.

They use their own names, but they're not registered, they post as guests, but with their real names.
Hence if I set the site to only allow posts and responses from registered members they would not be able to post.

Thats true, but what is the issue in them registering? They use their real names anyway so they are not hiding. And with registration, people can still use a unique name, I have not suggested you have to go to a real names only policy (aalthough that has its advantages.)
There are three main problems with people not having to register:-
1. There is no consistence of information.
2. Threads can get very confusing when you have multiple guests posting in one thread who dont use anything to differentiate themselves.
3. It makes it far to easy for drive by stirrers who have nothing positive to contribute and just wish to cause trouble.
I can not see any downside to registered posters. Almost all forums require it and have been better off since it was put into place.

I thought the words "nice" Verdelho" (when it came to the SH) was a mutually exclusive term
but am prepared to be educated, do you know one?
But I am sure I could find a "nice" Southern Highlands Sauvignon Blanc if promise to drink it all.
(Note - the word "nice":? is damning praise on the TORB Scale.

I do not register because I hardly ever post, and have a high expectation that I will not be a regular contributor on this forum, or perhaps even visitor. This is my second post, and if not for this thread, I would not even have a second post.
I am interested to read what some of you have to say.
Having to register is a hassle. For security reasons, my browser is set never to remember any user ids or passwords.
As it is, there are too many passwords to remember. I could register, but I may end up posting only one post and not another, ever. And I wouldn't be the only one.
As for stirrers, how difficult can it be to ignore them?
