TN: 2002 Battely Shiraz

Had this last night from a dozen kindly sent up by Gav...I thought this was a great wine and exactly what I am looking for in Australian shiraz. Had a beautiful nose of red berries, apricot, smoke and minerals with a lift from the viognier. Rich and balanced on the palate, great mouthfeel and fantastic long finish. It reminded me of a good cote rotie.

This is drinking great now...and I will drink it now, hopefully can get a bit more and ferret a few bottles away. This in my opinion is really a producer to watch, I am very excited by this wine (as you can tell!!).

More like this please??? any reccomendations for similar styles?

Interesting coincidence. I just read notes on this from some tosser called Antonio.

Clonakilla SV.Very beautiful wine....or just skimp and go for Guigal d'Ampuis.

Oh yes. The Genesis is very good. Clonakilla better for me though. Much. I will go large on the '03.

I do enjoy the clonakilla but find it a bit peppery sometimes...almosts makes me sneeze.

As above:

Clonakilla SV 01/03
Castagna 01/02
Giaconda 02
Bannockburn 01

Russell's site is a little warmer than Giaconda & Castagna, so the resultant SV is different.

If you want something cheaper, a great first vintage shiraz from Mount Majura in Canberra ($25 CD) - chard 02 is also excellent.

Have they sent out the mail order forms for the 03 yet? If not, then when does it come out? I can't ever remember which winery does orders at which time...

The website is http://www.mountmajura.com.au/, but distribution looks mainly cellar door (opportunity knocks - is any etailer listening?). Most wineries can ship internationally now. Email the winemaker Frank if you need more info - he has detailed TN pdf's available which he sent to me. CM also wrote up 3 of the wines in his latest newsletter and also expects big things from this plot.

Yeah, the Mount Majura is a cracker.

I have seen it at a few places in Sydney and Canberra. They have also just released a Temperanillo.

Worth searching for.

I heard from Tim Kirk yesterday - the Clonakilla newsletter is due in the next couple of weeks.

Never ends!

Have been buying his 01 SV in HK this week. Great wine; though a bottle last night seems to be closing down-pepper and spice to the fore with that formerly, interwoven dark cherry and blackfruits hiding. Will leave the rest for the long term.

Can anyone comment on his viognier in relation to a Condrieu style?

This is another Canberra region star in the making. I spent almost 2 hours with Frank this morning, who kindly took me on a tasting tour through the 04 wines from barrel.

There is no doubt that this site is special for shiraz (vines planted in 1998) and chardonnay (mixture of 1988 and 1998 vines). The 04 reds look brilliant and show already that 2004 is a vintage to watch for Canberra. The 04 Tempranillo is excellent (I think I'm a convert after sitting on the fence with the 03) and the 04 Merlot is the best I've tried from this region. The wood used is top rate (Saury and Sirouge with 100% barrel ferment for the chard). However, my personal favourite (along with the 02 chard & shiraz) is the Cab Franc/Merlot blend (all from 1988 vines). The 2000 is at its peak and sooo good for under $20 and Frank tells me the 01 is even better. There are so few well-priced cool climate merlot and cab franc/merlot around (mostly over $30).

Make sure you taste the chard at room temp (i.e. not too cold). Give the 02 shiraz a good airing (same for Tempranillo). I've been trying to do some TN's but I drink the bottles before I get a chance to do my usual 2-day tests.

I have just had the pleasure of trying a few of the Mount Majura wines mentioned in this thread. WOW!

I tried the Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot and Temperanillo.

Each was stunning and far exceeded what I had expected from the Canberra district. I am now planning a trip to Canberra to give it a thorough going over.

Lets hope other Canberra producers are achieving such great results. Any other lesser known that I shouldn't miss?
