The Term Port

Port was created when the English and French were at war in the 1700's, and English wine merchants were forced to source additional wines from Portugal.To stabilize these wines for transport they added brandy. It makes one think, even though Port was named after the township of Oporto and made in the Douro Valley in Portugal - Port was created by the English and therefore (as we cannot call sparkling wine Champagne anymore) why will the name Port be removed from Australian and other countries labels. Should it not be the English saying we cannot use the term Port?

us in england dont get that choice th european uninon tell us whta we can so and say i have tried port from oz and portugal and in my opinion oz is nicers.

"Port" is on the list of terms agreed to be phased out by the AWBC, although there is no date agreed for this.
The term "Port" is being removed from Australian labelling, with many companies no longer using the term. Southcorp (Seppelt, Penfolds, Lindemans) stopped using it a couple of years ago, although Hardys still do.

While sherry was named after the town of Jerez, was it named by the English or Spanish?
I understand that terms like Fino and Oloroso are being phased out, but why? They're not regional names.

It might be for the same reason the Joe Grilli (to my understanding) is no longer able to use the term Moda Amarone on his Cabernet Merlot blend. Amarone refers to a style of wine, not a region, but it seems to matter little.

Actually Amarone and a number of other terms have recently been ok'd by the EU.
Not sure about sherry or port issues however.
Common sense is doing its best to prevail.
I hope Joe Grilli will put the term back on his wines.
