April 2024 purchases

Post by VinoEd »

I’ll make a start on this one…. Ordered a mystery box from Cellardoor which included all Wynns wines:

1x 2020 JR
1x 2018 Michael
1x 2021 Glengyle
1x 2021 V&A Shiraz and Cabernet Shiraz
1x 2021 BL

Happy to add a few more 2021’s to the mix. Would’ve preferred a 2019 JR and Michael… but look, I hadn’t got the 2020 JR so it will complete a vertical in years to come.

Cheers Ed

Ed, the 2020 JR may possibly come good with time, but should never have been made. There were no single vineyard releases, no V&A's and no Michael, so this 2020 oddity will stick out like dogs balls. I've tried it twice, and its an ordinary wine. The 19 is a vastly superior offering and the 2021 that I tried last October was outstanding.

6 2022 Bowen Cabernet
6 2022 Bowen Shiraz
6 2021 Penley Estate Helios

Oakridge Estate "Willowlake" Pinot Noir and Chardonnay - I have a fondness for the vineyard, and a number of producers source it.
Dead Arm Shiraz
Howard Park Abercrombie Cabernet

I can’t believe how quickly they sell out

I am cellarer drinker not selling and I got very lucky but I’d imagine so many just buy for the quick dollar. I really wish they’d just allow a mail list to those who have purchase history with them or a bottle of Chardonnay for every other bottle etc etc

Get rid of the anxiety 😂 of being lightning or missing out

There is actually a reserved mailing list for some customers, which I only found out about on Sat.

I don’t know how the pricing went, but at the same discussion I was told that the quantity of wine available on the secondary market caused the price to crash last year. May still have been above the release price, but apparently there was no profit. Same has started to happen with Sami- Odi - current vintages barely make a profit at MW.

1988 Bowen Cabernet Merlot, only made for a few vintages. Low neck, so hopefully OK.

Not sure about that re crashing

Though tbh ; I am not sure of auctions, last years were more than double the winery price, circa 320-350 now at least at retail seem to be well over 400 if available

Just wondering how these guys will fair after the Chinese floodgates open up. I too have been hoovering up some great wines in anticipation as I know I'll be saying in a year or 2 - "Should have bought more". The Reschke RSR is ready to drink after someone did the aging for us.

I bought my first two bottles of Coleraine this month. I've not tried it before, but heard so many good things and got such a good price ($115) that I decided to jump in.

3 x 2022 Savaterre Chardonnay
Other purchases this month:
3 x 2022 Mount Pleasant Mountain D Dry Red
3 x 2017 Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea Shiraz
2 x 2020 Masseria Li Veli Susumaniello

Need to save the pennies for Standish next month….

Surely you’ll flip sone of them? 12 x of any wine is a little crazy. Yeah crazy me I know, my record is 24 x of Mt Edelstone and Capellano Barolo. It’s a bit tiresome drinking them knowing they’ll all be roughly the same at a certain period in their maturation.

Standish time again already… where does the time go.

I ended up getting 6 bottles of the Bress Shiraz vertical as referenced from the other Melbourne tasting thread.

I had an eye on a few things at the MW auction - ended up in a bidding war on what I really wanted and managed some self control to walk away at a point. Did land one bottle of the 2021 Coleraine though.

I bought some Standish last year for the first time, but the bottle is oversized and does not fit well with other wines in the fridges. Won’t be adding to my problems by buying more - it’s not as if there is a shortage of exciting Shiraz out there.
