A trip to Pemberton for the first time in over a decade revealed that:

a) the wineries I wanted to visit (and have bought from in the past) are not open. These include Pemberley and Picardy
b) at least one winery which I was an enthusiastic supporter of (which shall remain nameless), now produces much lower quality wine

but at least:

c) Silkwood was a wallet opener. They make three ranges, the Bowers ($21 a bottle for several varieties), the Walcott ($30 a bottle across the range) and the Bowman ($55 per bottle - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cebernet Sauvignon). There's also a couple of sparkiling wines, which my partner enjoyed. A dozen and a half of the Bowers Chardonnay came home with us, along with a couple of sparklings, and two or more bottles of each of the Bowmans also jumped into the boot of the car. By the way, lunch was also high quality with an interesting menu.

Cheers
Allan

I bought an 1825 Malaga and an 95 White Burg. I’m sure the latter will be poxed but the former will be great.

The 1825 features prominently on the bottle, but it’s not quite what it seems. It’s amfrom a Solera and bottled by a company set up it in 1825. Hard to tell how old the wine really is - probably bottled in the 49-60 period and the contents will be just a bit older. Lots of good stuff comes from Malaga - Muller is the famous name - I used to own some 1885 (Solera of course, though they never say that at the auction sites)

Yes, thanks for the recommendation. A good chance a bottle gets sampled this weekend before the box goes off to storage.

Picked up a couple of LEAS Cabernets via auction. 2005 and 2006. I really like these wines as they get to 15-20 years.

Cheers Ed

I picked up a few more Merricks Estate wines.

A 16 Shiraz to pair with the 14 that I already have.

An 18 Pinot Noir. Not had one for a while, but always an interesting comparison with the Shiraz as they age a bit more.

Also a couple of Cabs.

The 13 is labelled Cabernet, and has 10% Merlot and 60% new French oak.

The 14 Cabernet Sauvignon got 11 months in French oak barrels, 20% new.

These reds are usually released with a few years on them.

If you are unfamiliar with them, it was one of the early wineries in Mornington Peninsula est. in 1978 by George Kefford. The Cab among the original vines planted.

Located on the Western Port side of the peninsula. You come to Thompsons Lane, which is a dirt road, and head up the hill with the Stonier vineyard on the right. Merricks Estate is at the end of the road on top of the hill.

The Merricks Estate website says they have taken out the Cabernet vines and planted more Pinot, incl MV6 and a couple of new clones Pommard and Abel. Also replaced the Merlot they had with more Chardonnay.

They only have 4 hectares under vine and the vintages can vary dramatically - from 1,500 to 3,000 cases. So you can understand why they might have done this.

Merricks Estate Shiraz 16
Merricks Estate Pinot Noir 18
Merricks Estate Cabernet 13
Merricks Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 14
Pierre D’Amour Rose 23
Peter Lehmann The Bond Grenache 18
Cape Mentelle White Label Chardonnay 22
Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 22
Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 14
Wynns BL Cabernet Sauvignon 16
