Very dark purple. On the nose, this shows a dusty spiciness over some rich black fruits, some leafiness with a touch of mint. The palate doesnÂ’t show as over rich or over ripe, but otherwise follows the nose: smooth dusty cassis, mint, some leaf. This is not a blockbuster at all, quite medium bodied. Some cedary oak in support, good length, medium grained tannins, acid in balance. Al in all a delicious medium bodied mouthful, and 13.0% is a nice change. Lovely balance, will last well and develop nicely over 10 years or so.

Yep,
agree entirely with your post Wizz. I have St Hugo back to 86 and rarely am I disappointed. Never big and over the top, more about fruit and tannin balance.
Got a bottle of the yet-to-be released 01 in my tasting box so will report on it later in the week.

Thanks Anthony. I've bought it on and off since the 93 vintage and I agree, never a let down.

After 24 hours, the fruit came out a bit more. I'm looking forward to this wine developing over 10 years or so (I better get some more!!)

Please post on the 01, I'm interested to see how it shows from a warm ripe year,

Drank a bottle of the 98 on saturday night and, in my opinion this is one of the truly iconic wines, great value and flavour year in year out.

You can drink it in the car on the way home from the bottle 'o' or age for ten years. fantastic.

All this positive talk. I'm just going to have to get some now...

Anyone tried the 97 recently? Still have two left and don't want to see them go down the sink.

I remember the Orlando winemaker (forget his name!!) saying that the 97 is his favorite out of the 'lesser vintages'.

I'd drink them now or within the next 4-5 years.
