Mt Etna, 80% Nerello Mascalese, 20% Grenache, all from the Rivaggi contrada/cru/vineyard which is 960m above sea level. Notes are from a pop & pour / first glass situation.
Smells quite unlike any wine I have before, its very sappy, bursting with dark berry fruits yet also laden with bitter herbs and pine sawdust. The first sip announces that you have a serious yet wild wine in front of you, it is very long and complex, with all those aromas making themselves felt on the palate - yet added in is a distinct smokey character. Although initially quite rich, the acid balance from the Nerello Mascelese keeps things nicely in line and as the wine breaths in the glass, some of those darker Grenache fruits shift to the background as the tight core of fine tannins begin to assert themselves.
Perhaps not one for the Nerello Mascelese purist, but certainly a wine loaded with unique character. Highly recommended.
