Vat 1 1999

Post by graham »

Out of curiosity I dragged an 99 and 00 Tyrrells Vat 1 out the cellar to have with a saffron risotto , I was not disappointed . Smooth on the palate still, subtle lemon overtones and still a lot if life. The 99 was still drinking wonderfully while the 00 was more reserved. Have not touched these for years, will try the 01 and 02 tomorrow .
Nothing is so effective in keeping one young and full of lust as a discriminating palate thoroughly satisfied at least once a day.

I have had three bottles of the 99 Vat 1 in the space of a month. The first was TCA tainted. Second was exactly how you described and the 3rd was oxidised and completely fell apart within 30 minutes. Gotta love those corks.

I got a few of the hvd chardonnay and Johnos semillon.
The 14' vat 1 should be decent!

That's a real pity, where did you get them from, online auction or original purchase? I am about half way through a case I picked up at the time of their release and so far thee bottles are batting 100%. What surprised me about the last bottle I tried was how little development the wine has gone through. The colour is still that almost ultra little green/pale yellow tinge with not sign of the deepening golden yellow of older Semillons. The palate is still amazingly fresh and young with fantastic acid. Tasted blind I would have picked it at 3-5 years old at the most rather than rapidly approaching 20.

All three bottles from the the same six pack, purchased from a good friend (who bought on release) with excellent provenance. If I remember correctly, another one in the six pack also had TCA.

did you send the TCA's back for replacement?

Question to all - if the third bottle was oxidized and provenance was excellent, would they replace that too? It's clearly a fault of the cork.

Great question, Bob! Clearly logical point. Although proving it may be tricky. Probably need generous benefit of the doubt from the producer.

And if they agreed to replace, likely you'd get current vintage. Worth a crack though, the late 90's Vat 1's have been so cork random for me and many others.

Oxidized ones..hard to tell...they might..they might not..You can always give them a call and try..
TCA they will for sure...

But in all cases, you aren't likely to get the same vintage...sometimes they can get you slightly older vintages but you should expect that getting the most recent vintage is the most likely result..
