David,

Wait until you try the Gomersal Estate Shiraz. 100% new French Oak and the best barrels from the vintage. A big step up from the Reserve. So elegant for a Gomersal wine but still with enough punch to match the Gomersal style and although it is very good drinking now it has the structure to cellar for years and years. Well worth the money. Glad you enjoyed the cellar door with Gabby!

I was silly enough to buy an '09 BP Magnum, being my youngest's birth year, so now I have 3 :D :D.

Cheers
Ian

Ian, surely the Estate is not a bigger/better wine than the Reserve? Best barrels? Wow! That is a bargain at $15! Or am I getting my wines mixed up? :?:

Yep your getting them mixed up. There is a new label that you may not have got to try. $50 and 100% new French Oak. It has a Black and Gold label and to my palate (I prefer French Oak wines) was sensational. It may not be released yet. The 3 ranges are - Premium, Reserve, Estate from lowest to highest. The reserve is an exceptional wine too though.

Cheers
Ian

both because, I do every vintage, and because the new 2014's are so good!

Across the board of the new 2014 Head Wines releases, plus the superb new 2015 Eden Valley Riesling, which is a cracker!

Reason, see above!

Bought two of the 2014 Hoddles Pinots. Wasn't too interested in it but kinda like Gavin said, it's just something I buy no matter what. Won't touch them for a while but here's hoping they're something special and I'll wish I bought more! :D

6 x Mayer Pinots ... not buying much shiraz or cab these days. Down to a few producers only and stopped chasing the next "brilliant shiraz" a while ago.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. Was showing very well last night. Beautiful structure, fruit, cassis, tannins, hint of mint

A couple from auction:
1 x 1996 Penfolds Block 42
1 x 1996 Penfolds Bin 707

Anyone have any idea how long these have left in them assuming they are good bottles/corks?

I've had a bottle and a magnum of the 96 Block 42 in the last 9 mths. Had the bottle since release, magnum from auction about three years ago (present to self and friends for significant birthday last year). Absolutely outstanding cabernet, still tight and youthful, bouquet, great structure, black fruits, tannin, cedar, balance, length, opens up beautifully in the glass over time, longed for more. Still have a couple of bottles, but even at its current auction price, I am looking for more because it is and will become more of my kind of wine, complex old cabernet, beautiful bouquet, cigar box, mocha, on and on. To me it will go for a long long time. 20+yrs conservatively imo. Even then, probably just gently plateau off over years to come. One of the best cabernets I have had the pleasure of tasting.

the 96 707 needs another decade at least. I have maybe 6-7 bottles of a case left, and when last tried a couple of years ago was still waaaay too young.

Perhaps I should have added that the expectation of what the Block 42 is going to be like in 10+ years time is absolutely mouth-watering to contemplate. Drinking it last year was only just outside the vinfanticide limit

Also have some 96 707 since release, but haven't tasted any for a long while. I agree with felixp, needs time, but will also be excellent
