That dish will murder any dry red or white. You need a sweet(er) wine. Baumes du Venise or a Madiera might work.

A riche style champagne may work well too (chandon make a cheaper one). Actually any robust flavoured bubbles may be very good.

Although the pepper might go ok with the spurgle I think perhaps too strongly flavoured if the strawberries are good ones.. might work..I don't know if I can come at red wine and fruit...anyway the experimenting can only be fun.

Wine for strawberries
In the absence of one from northern Italy, Brown Bros Moscato might be worth a trirl......

We ate strawberries with just a light dusting of pepper when we lived in a strawberry growing area back in the late 60's. Don't go over the top with the pepper.
It should be used to cut the acid and allow the sweetness of the strawberry to come through.
I like to see the look on peoples faces when putting pepper on strawberries is suggested. It soon changes when they try it.
As for a wine - I think a sweetie over thin almond bread with a little double cream on the strawberries.

Chardonnay: A drink you have when there is no RED wine, the beer hasn't arrived and the water may be polluted
Thanks for the suggestions Alan, Graham, Phil, Gary and DJ,
And its nice to hear somebody else has tried it too.
Much appreicated, I think this will be quite an interesting little experiment
