Great dining in Melbourne this weekend

Post by chillwrx »

Looking for inspiration- in Melbourne for a conference this week ( for maybe 5 minutes) and staying down to get away from the g20 with a $200 good food dining voucher (which I think is accepted at many places) burning in my pocket. Staying in Collins street but I have transport. Going to the Yarra valley one day, Geelong another and maybe down to the mornington peninsula. Staying away from the good food and wine festival - saw it in brisbane and a bit over it.

Any other thoughts what to do?

Hi Chillwrx, I had a quick look at the list, and see The Town Mouse is on there - a nice spot. Grossi Florentino also features, and is a Melbourne institution.

For drinkies, the list is almost endless... I like City Wine Shop and The Supper Club on Spring Street (opposite parliament). To get to The Supper Club, go through the big door between the City Wine Shop and The European, and up the stairs. Nice outside area at the top too, if the sun is out.

If you were looking for places to eat with that card, I can confirm that the Town Mouse is excellent, but if I was choosing, I'd pick either the Merricote (in Northcote) or Union Dining (in Richmond). Coda (Flinders lane) would also be worth a look. Of the Mornington Peninsula options, I was impressed with Salix but it was some years ago. I've also been impressed with The Long Table, but again I haven't been there for a few years. The Chef that used to own it is now down the road at Polpero (Formerly the Vines). There are no shortage of wineries to visit in either the Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula.

Thanks everybody. Got in lateish last night and everything was still open late through Chinatown? In brisbane everything would have been shut.

The town mouse was fantastic - sit at the bar if you can. Impressed by a few of the many cocktail bars with the hairy canary being a favourite just for the best drinks. Hitting the morning ton today.
