CNY Offline #1: Sydney, confirmed@ Fix St James, Wed 5th Feb

Hey folks, I am heading back to Australia at Chinese New Year in the first week of February.

I have quite a lot of wine in my cellar which has been untouched for 6-months and it is a good excuse to crack some nice bottles. I will be in both Sydney and Adelaide and wanted to see if there was any interest in getting together a couple of offlines to help me with the chore of drinking?

I will be in Sydney Wed 5th February - Friday 7th February. At the least I will be cracking Penfolds Bin 707 1993 (Magnum). Chinese New Year is a traditional time of reunion: so the I suggest the wine theme should be "old favourites".

Any takers for one of those nights at one of the regular venues (Fix St James or Rocket would suit me fine)?

Hey Sam, I am very keen to catch up, but can only do Wed 5th I'm afraid. It will be great to catch up :) Hope the date suits others?
Cheers,
David.

Edit: or Friday 7th.

I have a 1990 Bin 389 that I think would qualify. I would be keen, particularly if it ended up being Fix at James.

Hi Sam

I'm keen for fix, not sure I have anything old available but have a few favourites and will bring something decent.

The 5th sounds good to me. Fine with either FSJ or Rocket.

Probably doesn't matter too much but there was some sort of issue last time Sam and I were at FSJ...Maybe we should see if we can do a flat rate per person for corkage...they seem pretty open to it since we're likely to have more than 1 per person.

Looks like we need some white! I'll bring a Kumeu chardonnay, an old favourite.

Mick, Block 5 08 or the Eileen chard get my vote!

5th Feb all good.

I can hear poor Burges weeping already.

I just noticed some banter on Collector wines over on the purchases thread ...i have quite a bit of 08 & 09 Reserve Shiraz gathering dust in wine ark. I better bring one along in addition, so Burges wont ignore me

It's OK Mick, burges will be supping away on all the big reds, and making a dent in Sam's 707 magnum. I'm sure he'll survive.

And besides, after the Jura Les Graviers I showed him, he loves chardonnay now! :D

I know burges would continue weeping if I brought a pinot, so how about a '98 St Henri to add to the mix.

Guys, guys, guys.
I’m not sure why you have this impression that I don’t care for pinots and whites. I love them. Love giving them away. I love leaving them for others to drink. And specially love it when others prefer these over big reds.
So please feel free to drink as much of these as you can and don't worry about me ... I’ll just make do with the 707, 389, St Henri, Relic et al :D

Just as an aside, a potential location for future offlines on the northside is Cafe Lyon, opposite Lindfield Station on the Pacific Hwy (the old Food and Plonk). They do byo Mon to Thu, and the food is exceptional. http://www.cafelyon.com.au/

Whilst Rocket is great, I think the food here is better, and the atmosphere more lively. No private room to hide our indiscretions though

I was going to bring a 99 Vat 1 but it seems I have been pipped at the post, so instead, and given these comments, I'll bring an '02 Dead Arm

Hey guys, I am only a recent member and pretty much a wine tasting noob but would love to attend and meet a few members, plus always pleasant going to see Stuart's people at FSJ for a feed. I can do Wed 5th as long as it is after 7pm

Noone has suggested anything fizzy or anything sticky. That may be for an obvious reason that I have totally missed. I don't have anything that would constitute a really 'old' favourite, but Pol Roger is one of my favourite champagnes and I can provide an '02. I have recently tried a few bottles of sauternes and I think the Château Suduiraut is going to quickly become an old favourite. I could bring 2 half bottles of the '09.

If fizz isn't the go and a dessert wine is getting out of line on a school night, I could bring an '06 Art Series Chardy or an '04 Giaconda Warner Shiraz.

Thoughts?

Scott

Hey Scott - no problem I have pencilled you into the list... I am thinking the Pol Roger could be a good start to the evening unless anyone else has a strong opinion?

That's a nice looking lineup guys  have fun!

I'd be keen to see what you make of the 389, 707 and Dead Arm. I have identical vintages in the cellar...

Cheers
Matt

All

With apologies (I have made a habit of this in the last 2 offlines) I am going to have to pull out from this one since I'll be down in Melbourne with work once again.

Apologies - I'm disappointed to be missing out on the fantastic lineup above.
