Wow! What a Mark-up!

This is from the wine list at one of London's exclusive restaurants, The Ivy;

http://www.the-ivy.co.uk/wine/red-new-world-and-lebanon/

"Torbreck 'Woodcutters' Shiraz, Barossa 2010 Australia - 75.00"

Im assuming that's in pounds so that equates to roughly $116 AUS for a $20 wine.

:D

Wow...that's very cheeky pricing.
Torbreck probably has a good name generally overseas, but without punters realising the gaps in their range.

French wine forums are probably posting similar thoughts regarding Australia. For e.g. big producers like Faiveley, saw a Clos du Myglands for $120 in a Sydney bar the other day.

Torbreck is also more expensive in the UK than in Australia from a normal retail perspective...which differs from many other Australian wines which are actually a lot less expensive in the UK (including VAT) than in Australia...

Had some recent gifts to send in the UK and was shocked to see how cheap some of the stuff is....

Are you referring to Penfolds?

No. I wouldn't buy Penfolds as a gift unless it was a Grange..I actually should've been more specific..Torbreck Woodcutter's is more expensive..the rest of their line is about the same...

But as far as what was cheaper...

Shaw and Smith Shiraz
d'Arengberg Dead Arm
Keith Tulloch Kester
Lovedale Sem
Maurice O'Shea Shiraz
Grosset Polish Hill Riesling

Bunch of other stuff but that is some stuff I noticed..

I'm pretty sure they just pick them up at auction as well. Considering that BP in the poorer vintages (like 07 & 08) go for less than $100, that is sure some mark up. I guess they have to wear the consequences of a corked bottle as well as I couldn't see Rockfords giving one of the big retailers another bottle to sell at that price. I've seen it in restaurants cheaper than those prices. Reminds me why I very rarely venture into said stores!!   they are.

Cheers

Ian, off topic a bit here, but are you aware that Gomersal have had a little makeover and released some new wines? They seem well priced.
Cheers

Matt,

Thanks for the reminder - I'd better ring Baz!

I will be ordering some 2010 Shiraz this week. As for the 2011's, as much as I like Gomersal's wines, I'll hold off on them until I taste them. The deal he has going at the moment is exceptional but I just can't bring myself to buy yet. The new labels are a big improvement. They look much more professional and modern. I liked the old retro looking label but I think with them trying to sell more wine in China and elsewhere, an upgrade was needed.

Baz did say that the 2010 Shiraz will be a cracker. He had very high hopes for it. I look forward to the 2010 GSM and Mataro being released as well, although they might be a bit away yet.

Cheers
Ian

I think I mentioned in another post before I saw a mark up of Mt Langhi Ghiran Cliff Edge 2006 ... which a certain online clearance flogged off for $15 and I bought half a dozen... on the wine list of Luke Mangan's Singapore venture at SGD$150...

The Woodcutter's is about $30 retail here in Edmonton which is a bit high but there is one store here where it was selling for just over $50. A mistake I presume.

Mahmoud.

300-600 RMB for Woodcutters? 太贵了!
Singapore is not quite as bad, although I just got an offer on the much discussed Teusner Riebke 2012... for $38/bottle, about $33 in Aussie currency
