Oct 2011 - new purchases this month

Post by Jay60A »

Bit of a quiet month last month as school fees kick in (omg) so most of the focus is now "cheap as chips" though it won't last.

12 x Tesco Tingleup Riesling 2010 (from Howard Park - superb wine, stupid price, should have bought 24)
6 x McWilliams Elizabeth Semillon 2005 (also Tesco, UK)
5 x Penfolds Cellar Reserve Barossa Cabernet 2005 (Fine Wine Delivery Co, NZ)
“There are no standards of taste in wine. Each mans own taste is the standard, and a majority vote cannot decide for him or in any slightest degree affect the supremacy of his own standard". Mark Twain.

6 x 2007 Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot. Not tasted it, but brought on the strength of the 2005.
12 x 2009 Waipara Hills Waipara Pinot Noir

2009 Church Road Reserve Syrah. Under $30, too good to resist. This is where I am looking to shop these days...classy wines at around $30.

12 x 2008 Tahbilk Shiraz
12 x 2008 Tahbilk Cab Sav

I took advantage of the Tahbilk member’s special offer which made these $10 a bottle.

3 x 2010 Chrismont La Zona Arneis
3 x 2009 Chrismont La Zona Savagnin
3 x 2010 Chrismont La Zona Pinot Grigio
3 x 2010 Chrismont Petit Manseng

I get a case a quarter from Chrismont, which is my favourite King Valley winery. I still have a good selection of their reds so opted to try the new release whites.

12 x 2006 Winburndale Cab Shiraz
6 x 2009 Winburndale Alluvial Chardonnay
12 x 2008 Winburndale Fontana Cab Sav

This winery flies well under the radar, probably because it is located in Bathurst NSW, but makes superb wine and has been an obscure favourite of mine since I met the winemaker at a local degustation dinner about 5 years ago. I hadn’t visited the winery since 2008 so decided to drop in on a trip out to Orange. When I was there in 2008 I tasted a barrel sample of the 2008 Cab Sav and declared then that I would buy some when it was released. It was already pretty good and this was only about 3 months after the grapes had been picked.

The finished wine has justified the wait – it is superb. I bought this on a Friday and 3 days later this wine won the NSW Wine Awards trophy for best Cabernet!

I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Went to a new bar after our Halloween run, everyone pretty much still in costume. A fellow runner told me that the wine store next door had some specials like Blass Red Label for A$10.30 and Wyndham Estate 555 for A$12.20. Neither are my cup of tea but said I would check it out.

I walked into the store still wearing the white and red makeup on my face and walked out with the following:

6 x 1997 Wynn's Black Label Cabernet for A$12.50.

Now THAT is a special price.

Mahmoud.

8 x 2010 Thompson Estate Semillon Sauvignon Blanc
4 x 2010 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier

Was hoping to collect a dozen Epsilon Shiraz on the weekend to see out the month, but they were all gone at the local outlet. :-(
It's totally unproven that wine will brain my damage.

Can I come visit you, well, your cellar at least....,

Great lineup for a fellow Champagne lover!

I have enjoyed a couple of these myself

NV Extra-Brut Fidèle Vouette - fascinatingly different, wish I had more!

NV Brut Val Vilaine Inflorescence, Cédric Bouchard - as above

Lots more to find, and try!

.

If you're ever in London, let me know ! In fact Andrew Jordan and I will be in Champagne in January, so hopefully we'll uncover a few additional treasures....
