July 2010-What have you been buying

The month is only 2 days old and I've just picked up a case of quaffers (not worth mentioning).
I tell a little lie, 8 quaffers and 4x 2006 Cirillo 1850 Old Vine Grenache. Never tried it but the 150 year old vines thing caught my eye and I'm Loving Grenache at the moment. So I thought I gotta have me some of that!

Speaking of grenache, I opened a 2001 La Testa grenache (15%) last nite - big chewy - became lovely after about 2 hours - could only drink half the bottle with my wife which is unusual - be interesting to see how it shapes up tonite.

Two major orders this month - a dozen of the 2009 Felton Rd assorted pinots (about $720 - $730 delivered to the door i.e., 4 Bannockburn, 4 Cornish Point and 4 Block 3's)
and the Wendouree order which I can never predict (and the bill will come much later thank heavens) - 2 of Shiraz malbec, 2 cab malbec, 2 cabernet, 4 shiraz, 2 shiraz mataro

wish I could order more but the bank keeps insisting that I make mortgage payments!

cheers

Luke

Hi Luke - Did you get the Felton Road direct from NZ?

And Rens, be interested to see what you think of the Cirillo, I'm always on the lookout for more Grenache.

So far this month (in 2's & 3's)-

08 Escarpment Kupe Pinot
08 Henschke Johanns Garden
06 Wynns John Riddoch
08 Pebble Bay Pinot (Had this at a tasting and for a sub $20 pinot it's very good - nice savoury characters)
08 Valminor Albarino

It's time to build the cellar I think

Brown Hill 2004 -Fimiston Reserve Shiraz x2
Brown Hill 2005 -Fimiston Reserve Shiraz x3
Brown Hill 2007 -Fimiston Reserve Shiraz x2

Big wines that are recommended to be cellared for 10 yrs. Will be putting these away although the 2007 is very approachable and drinking well now after some time in the decanter.

From Auction:

3 x 2005 D'arenberg Coppermine Rd Cabernet. For the cellar.

1 Hardys HRB 2007 Margaret River/Adelaide Hills/Pemberton Chardonnay. Looking forward to this.

2 x Yalumba Galway Pipe Port. A house favourite at this time of year. How I like the change of seasons and its effect on what you drink. Recent VP's have been gorgeous.

1 x "Yalumba Port" quoting Bayer as the provider. Probably a chrissy gift for clients and a real lottery although Yalumba don't/didn't make bad fortifieds. When Blass bought the Galway Pipe brand they put cheap stuff in it and ruined the label. Why do the big guys keep doing this?

1 x Mt Edelstone 2007
2 x Mandala chardonnay 2007
2 x Lethbridge Estate shiraz 2007
2 x Lethbridge Estate Dr Nadeson riesling 2009

and Chuck, could not agree more about the change of seasons, and the change of drinking choices. The long summer of riesling is a distant memory, and thanks to the Seppelts rolling deals on VP stock, winter is as toasty as can be, and shiraz tastes like nectar as well. Mmmmmmmm

And food choices change too. Tonight is a slow cooked Osso Buco. Mmmmmmmmmm.

On VP's last nights was one of those Seppeltfielld VP's, the '98 375 ml job. Very nice indeed.

snap on foods!

Chuck (really) steak-based chilli cooked for 5 hours on Thursday night, baked Blue Eye tonight, and coq au vin tomorrow night. Winter cannot hurt us!

It was 99 for me last night, the controversial one :)!

Just back from another auction.

12 x Kangarilla Rd 2004 Shiraz Viognier. To drink now and for the cellar for a few years only. Knocked the top off to try before dinner and very very nice. Hopefully better with breathing. Just turned off the osso buco and needs a bit more garlic and root veges.
6 x Claymore 2009 Joshua Tree Riesling. To drink and for the cellar.

And from the local:

2 x Cape Mentelle 2007 MR Shiraz. For the cellar
4 x Seppelts 2008 Chalambar. For the cellar

Got again a few interesting bottles:

6 x Henschke Cyrill Henschke 1984
8 x Henschke Cyrill Henschke 1992
10 x Mount Mary Cabernet Sauvignon 1989
7 x Cullen Merlot 1991
3 x Penfolds Grange 1996
2 x Petaluma Bridgewater Mill Shiraz 1999

13 x Sine Qua Non Backward & Forward White Blend 1998

1 x Chateau L'Arosee 1957 (Magnum)
1 x Chateau Cos d'Estournel 1963
1 x Chateau Margaux 1966
1 x Chateau Angelus 1971
6 x Chateau Haut Brion 1984
1 x Chateau Margaux 1984
4 x Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1984
1 x Chateau Margaux 1987
1 x Poulet Pere & Fils Santenay Clos de Malte 1961
1 x J. Prieur Montrachet 1986
1 x Marc Rougeot-Dupin Puligny Montrachet Les Grands Champs 2000

1 x Barros Colheita 1965

2 x Masi Amarone 1971 (Double Magnum)
12 x Tenuta Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Vigneto La Casa 1981

2 x Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese 2004
1 x Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett 2004 (Magnum)

6 x Kereskedöhaz Tokaji 5 Puttunyos 1990

Some more tasting notes:

Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese 2004: Just had a try at the 2004. After we had a magnificent magnum of the 2003 a month ago, we had high hopes also for this bottle. And we were not disappointed. Perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, good finish, a perfect riesling.

Weingut Aufricht Blaufraenkisch (Pinot Noir) Isabel 3-Lilien 2007: A wine most of you might not know. It is from a winery at the Lake of Constance in Germany. A very fine Pinot, with silky tannins, great fruit and very nice finish. Certainly up to the best wine from Burgundy. Unfortunately, very difficult to get some bottles, even in Germany.

I also had some friends invited to drink some wines which we tasted blind. I opened my last bottle of the Acacia Reserve Pinot Noir St. Clair Vineyard 1986 which was my surprise wine last year. Also this bottle was a perfect Pinot, absolutely a fantastic wine. Unfortunately, the 1986 is finished now, luckily I still got a good dozen of the 1996 (not yet tried).

Although the Acacia was perfect, there was even a step higher - we tried again the Henschke Keyneton Estate Shiraz / Cabernet / Malbec 1985 which I mentioned in my last post in June: Again a big W O W!!!!! My friends also said that this one is one of the greatest wine they have had so far. Truly an amazing wine, just heaven on earth. One of my friends told me that he did not want to brush his teeth that evening because of the flavors he still had in his mouth that night. Luckily, still two bottles left.

I will happily pass over buying the insanely priced 2009 Bordeaux and buy more of these extraordinary New World wines. Fortunately, they are currently not really in favour of the wine world, so I can get them at "insane" prices (e.g. Cyrill Henschke for AUD 25.-- or Cullen Merlot for AUD 20.--!!!!!)

Cheers and happy drinking.

The Henschke and Mount Mary I got from a sale of a big wine shop, the other three from an auction.

Monghead, at these prices I could not resist to buy almost all bottles of the Australian wines they offered. I rather do not buy the 2009 Bordeaux. I hope they are in a similar condition as the Keyneton 85, I would be a very happy man.

Cheers.

Hey redwine, isn't Blaufrankish a seperate varietal to Pinot Noir? I thought the german for Pinot Noir was Spatburgander. Sounds like a great wine in any event.

Great result Rednut!

For me, I finally got into a bottle of the Yalumba 2008 Cigar at a work lunch, no notes, but I felt an immediate imperative to collect 6 straight after work. I haven't enjoyed a Coonaarra wine this much in years and years. Then again, I haven't approached a lot either :)
This is a super wine for my taste.

Andrew, you are absolutely right, my mistake. It was a Spaetburgunder and not a Blaufraenkisch. We also had a Blaufraenkisch "Moric" from Roland Velich (Burgenland) that evening. A good wine, but nothing to get excited about. Probably, we should try once the Neckenmarkter Blaufränkisch which got 95 from Parker.

Cheers

I'm pretty good at skipping the tidal wave of "who cares" wines that are offered at "bargain" prices on an almost daily basis, but this one i couldnt let pass. One of the most morish chardonnay labels in the country and probably if you think about it you could argue still in NZ's top 10 chardonnays even given hte fact it doesnt have the profile it once did.

2006 Morton Estate Black Label Chardonnay $19 a bottle in a 6 pack

If you kiwis havent seen the deal and want to know more PM me
