Night one: OK, A medium bodied red that struggles for ripeness – Something that I have noticed in a few reds from the granite belt recently.
Night three: Different wine having filled out measurably – long dark fruits (dominated by plums for me) backed up by crystal clear tannin structure. Finishes long too. Cool climate Shiraz to a tee. Definitely recommended.
2007 Symphony Hill Shiraz (Granite Belt QLD)

WEll that's a miracle - good wine from the Granite Belt. My prejudice against the GB is based on no more than a very bad day's tasting 10 years ago, and a more recent bottle of red from there. Perhaps I should try a bit harder.

I can strongly recommend the wines from Boireann. I have especially enjoyed their mouvedre blends in addition to their flagship shiraz viognier. Wines that really engage you. Give them a go before you write off the Granite Belt. I am sure there are other labels that also impress, but for me it's always Boireann. I buy from their 'Boireann Bunch' (Wine Club) every year.

I agree. I do tend to go with the known labels for me but I have enjoyed some good QLD wines recently, witches falls chardy was very good.
My wife signed me up for the Symphony hills mail out because she met and liked the owners. Some of the whites have been out there but the shiraz is worth a look and, as long as it is given a decent decant, is very good. Thankfully my wife does not meet many winery owners as it would send me bankrupt.

Pyramids Road is another one to look out for. The straight Mourvedre would be my pick but the Cabernet is close on it's heels.
