Alcohol tax changes

Post by odyssey »

http://www.smh.com.au/national/grog-rev ... -mdga.html

FTA:

Acknowledging the social and health impacts of alcohol use and abuse, the taxes would increase in accordance with the alcohol content at six key points: 3.5 per cent, 5 per cent, 7 per cent, 10 per cent, 15 per cent and 22 per cent.

I imagine this may result in the end of high alcohol (15% or greater) non-fortified Aussie wines?

The article notes that spirits will not change much as they are already highly taxed, but what about fortifieds? What is the current taxing for fortifieds, and will their prices increase by much?

That may not be a bad thing.

I'd like to buy good whisky cheaper, rarely buy table wine 15%+. The whole alcopops tax debate I thought reasonable, tax the spirit alocohol content, no problem. I drink little fortified wine and when I do, it's 17.5 to 20% a/v. BUT beer is as excessively taxed as whiskey.

Totally agreed.

So in terms of wine (ignoring other alcohol for the moment), this replaces the WET, right?

Well, it certainly may result in greater abuse of the + or - 1.5%
As always, IMVHO. And Cheers
