A quick trip to Clare

Post by John #11 »

Just back from a lightning trip to the Clare Valley.

The 2009 Rieslings are just sensational!

Some highlights below... (cellar door prices)

2009 Grosset Polish Hill
Awesome, exuberant and lifted floral notes, youthful and tangy, lemon and pure lime juice, minerally and slatey. Will age well, but will also impress in its youth! Versatile. $39 Great Cellar door service.

2009 Grosset Springvale Riesling
Just as awesome, but very closed and restrained as yet, with abundant lemon and lime, minerally / steely finish, gorgeous acid finish. My pick of the bunch! $31

2009 Kilikanoon Mort's Reserve Watervale riesling
My third favourite, intense, crisp, lots of crunchy green apples, lemon and lime, and very dry gravelly and slatey finish. $30

2009 Kilikanoon Mort's Block Watervale Riesling
Not far behind the reserve above, and just incredible value. $25

2009 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling
Crisp and fruity with lemon and lime and mandarin, green apples and some bath salts. Good whack of acid on the finish. Awesome value at $15 Great cellar door service.

2009 Claymore Joshua Tree Riesling
Easily their best ever, crisp, pure fruit, predominantly limes, with a slatey dry finish. $18, also great value.

2009 Clos Clare Riesling
Crisp and fruity, chock full of citrus, nice minerally elements, very gluggable, very nice. $22

2009 Jeanneret Big Fine Girl Riesling
Very bright and lively, citrus and blossom, talc and slate. Great length and did I say crisp? $18. Magical cellar door service!

2009 Eldredge Riesling
Great value here, a drink while young wine. $17 Good cellar door service.
...
and the list goes on.

It was also nice to see some Chardonnay making a bit of a come-back in the Clare Valley, notably Skillogalee and Jeanneret

Cheers

Heard this before regarding Grosset...but some vintages just didn't perform for me.
OK John, I'll give it another try after the disappointing '07 and boring 08's.
I love a great riesling.
