Hi - I've seen the 2005 Wynns John Riddoch and the Michael Shiraz both on a pretty good special. You don't usually see them this side of the Tasman much, let alone cheap. How good are these wines and would you recommend one over the other? (long term cellering in mind)

The JR would have the cellaring edge due to being made of cabernet. The 05's are a great vintage pair however so it the price is right you should get a Michael as well.

I tasted the 05 John Riddoch twice last year and amongst some big guns at a Cabernet tasting. It was up there with the very best. Excellent to outstanding prospect IMO. Wish I could see some here at a good price would snap up in a second (no hope being in overpriced Perth).

The Michael Shiraz was also very good when tasted at a Wynn’s tasting. Buy both……..

It's definitely worth having some 05 JRs in your cellar if you've found an attractive price.

Although the Michael is a nice drink, you can find better shiraz for cheaper IMO. STILL, it'd be nice to have 2-3 btls laid down for the next few years.

Tasted the Michael last night. Don't think think it has the complexity of old. Still quite young and brooding for its age, though. What's your price?

I've seen it for $48 a bottle - or that was the price last night.

My rough notes.
Wynns Michael Coonawarra Shiraz 2005
Black red, blood red edges. Spice, black currant, dark oak, soap, old fruit cake and with time chocolate on the nose. Quite a lot of pepper in the palate together with earthy savoury notes and tar. Firm acidic backbone will ensure longevity. A big wine with a silky texture - brooding, powerful and long.

They are both super I dont think you can make a poor choice here at all Your on a winner either way .
For me i collected the 05 Michael(Cellar till 2025) and later on will get some JR 05 When Funds allow (cellar till 2030) so How old etc will you be then ?

Agree - tasted eight Aussie Shiraz's last night and most were good to excellent. The Michael didn't jump out as distinctively Coonawarra either. Tasted blind, with that chocolate on the nose, I was heading for McLaren Vale.

My wine of the night with price taken into consideration was Wolf Blass Gold Label Barossa Shiraz at $15 a bottle. Just became more and more complex with time in the glass.

These wines are certainly great for $45-50, but I think prices are nudging upwards to $AUD70. Maybe on special...

Sue - I've seen it for NZ$50. Wine searcher doesn;t come uop with a price better than NZ$80 and I believe its typically AU$80 in Aus, so this is half that price. Tempting...

If I could find the 05 JR at $50 a bottle, I wouldn't think twice about getting a six pack. Bit of a no brainer that one.

I tasted both at the Coonawarra Roadshow and while they are both good, the JR is definitely the pick and a top wine from a top vintage. I was looking to buy some but never actually saw it on sale, let alone at a good price.

If you are getting $NZ50, like Kris says, no brainer...

The real question would then be, is 6 bottles enough?

Agree with the 6-pack idea. It breaks my usual 3 bottle cellaring wine limit but the QPR is great and you would have a few decades to drink it!

Hello Sue this is out of Jeremy Olivers book , The Michael 97 points and will cellar 17-25 plus and the JR 96 points and cellar the same timeframe , mind you I had 1990 and 91 recently and both were great ! I havent checked the back label for printing errors as i got a 6 pack so it will stay in this condition for 10 years then come out (so will tell you then ) Regards Dazza

A little while ago i opened a bottle of the '05 JR, it was a very delicious wine, snap them up!

Ditto. Liked the 04 JR more, but the 05 is drinking better right now. Either way its a big buy buy buy!

It actually costs more than $48 wholesale in Oz.......

The deal I saw was $47.90NZD in 6-packs, with $120NZD (approx) delivery to Aus. Buy a dozen and have it delivered for under $50AUD per bottle.
The details were in the members area of my site a few days ago.
