Went to a wine dinner last night, it was an open theme.

NV Miniere - Absolu, Blanc de Blanc
2001 Trimbach - Clos st Hune. Corked.
2005 Trimbach – Clos St Hune.
2002 Trimbach – Frederic Emile.
2015 Wagner Stempel – Gutswein Riesling.
2010 Morey Blanc – Corton Charlemagne. A bit premoxed.
2010 Il Palazzone – Brunello di Montalcino.
2000 Rousseau – Clos des Ruchottes.
2015 Mark Haisma – Pommard Clos des Arvelets.
2001 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia.
1999 Delas – La Landonne. Bretty but still OK.
2005 Sin Qua Non – Atlantis Syrah.
2010 La Tour Blanche.
NV Stanton & Killeen – Liqure Tokay.

WOTN was had to pick between the Rousseau and Sassicaia.

Shame about the 01 CSH. Excellent wine

And equally sad that 2010's are premoxing on a regular basis. Sigh, looks like I'll have to drink 2011's and 2012's soon then.

How was the structure on the Rousseau 2000? Accesible and good to go?

Agree when you a good bottle of the 01 Clos st Hune it is an excellent wine as is the 01 Frederic Emile, had them both a couple times.

I’ve had a bad trike rate with the Clos st Hune from the mid 90’s to the early 00’s.
I’d say about 50% have been oxidized or corked from about a dozen bottles.

Yes it is a shame, an importer in our wine group told us that 2010 white burgundy is having big problems with premox.

The Rousseau was drinking well. Perfumed red fruit and complex to smell, very fine tannins and silky smooth on the palate.

I was given one of these to celebrate the birth of my son in 2005. I had thought to open it when he turns 21 out around 2026. It is well cellared. Any reason to think it might not last the distance?

Yep, oxidisation for Trimbach has been a problem ..... and particularly CSH.

Love the 01 CFE. They were really cheap at release which made them taste even better!

FFS CSH has POX/ cork issues? Be worthwhile carrying them back to the winery for refund .

Sadly yes Jamie.... not quite to the extent of some white burgundy, but a problem nonetheless. It's a shame, because for my tastes it's the greatest white wine in the world when on song...

I'm drinking 2017 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. Nice, but not the greatest vintage of this classic

Still definitely Sauvignon Blanc for adults. Very classical flavour spectrum - Green Bean, Gooseberry, ripe lime... great with panfried snapper and asparagus. Summer is on it's way (I hope). We didn't have a summer last year!

GrapeMates monthly casual Friday event last night. Spot the odd one out!

Bellarmine Riesling 2004 - Nice balance of age and fruit, a touch less residual sugar would have seen it even better.
Bindi Quartz Chardonnay 2000 - On the downhill slope, lacking vibrancy but did improve with some air time. Good acid.
Kumeu River Mate's Chardonnay 2013 - Still young, but very impressive, about to have the final glass tonight.
Tyrrell's Belford Semillon 2004 - Some tropical florality hints, still youthful clean and fresh under screwcap. Very good.
Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1979 - Beautiful old bottle, felt like it might start to fade but never did, classic old school Bordeaux deliciousness. Thanks bobthebuilder!! Loved it, what a treat.
Occhipinti SP68 Nero D'Avola Frappato 2015 - I'm not a fan of Nero d'Avola, but the Frappato seems to have balanced this up very nicely. Good wine.
Ruggabellus Timaeus 2015 - Had been wanting to try this for ages, finally opened it, really impresses with it's restraint. 83% Grenache, reminded me of the style of' Rayas. Very pretty.
Rockford Rod & Spur 2005 (corked)
Rockford SVS Flaxman 2005 - Still young and black fruited broodiness, but really good balance and great tannins. Nice.
Warrenmang Torchio Aged Pressings NV - Unusual wine, a bit of that appassimento raisined character, quite complex and well made, yet on the heady side of ripe for me to love it more.
Marsh Estate Vat "R" 2010 - Sorry this one passed me by, can't recall specific description.
Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache 2004 - Not sure if this was a correct bottle (kind of hope not but maybe) or if affected in some way but this was a bit wrong.

Earlier this week....
Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2014, was particularly impressed at it's ability to drink well 4 nights after originally being opened, 1/4 full out of the fridge on Day 4, even better than Day 1!
Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger 2012 - not a style I much enjoy anymore, I'm sure it would be a hit around the BBQ/Pizza oven with big red lovers. Just too raisined for me (which is the style they're going for of course).
Patina Little Wood Chardonnay 2011 - Freshness and energy, well made wine with just a light kiss of oak to round it out. (hence little wood of course!). Not complex or powerful, just a tasty goldilocks mid-week quaffer.

Tattinger Comtes de Champagne 2004 .... yum yum yum, such a great wine. 95
Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay 2014 .... one of the better releases, will live two decades 93
Jean Claude Bachelet Puligny 1er Sous le Puits 2010 .... absolutely fantastic, drinking perfectly now 95
Henri Boillot Corton Charlemagne 2005 .... too young still, bit one dimensional at this stage, but will be great 92+++
Olivier Leflaive Puligny 1er Folatieres 2007 .... has finally come around. Beautiful 93

Toolangi Block E Pinot 2015 .... not bad, no real spine or minerality, but good fruit. 89
Meadowbank Pinot Noir 2016 .... bleh, strawberries and cream. Fruit and nothing else 86
Bass Phillip Gamay 2014 .... nup, sweet and simple. Stuff from Beechworth kills this 84
Bass Phillip Reserve Pinot Noir 2010 .... embarrassing when a wine 1/15th the price is a better drop. 89
Hoddles Creek 1er Pinot Noir 2012 .... really nice wine, great structure. Simply incredible value. 90
Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin vv 2010 .... absolute cracking villages wine. Amazing. 2010 is stellar in Burgundy. 95
Dujac Clos de la Roche 2005 .... dude, stop it with the whole bunch in "classic" years. Needs another 20 years, as do all 2005 GC's. 93+++
Domaine de la Romanee Conti La Tache 1979 .... everybody swooned (at the label hehe) lots of Vosne Spice, red fruits. 96
Domaine Leroy GC 1er Les Combettes 2001 .... in the Fourrier style of red fruits and high tone, worth 20% of it's cost, but bloody good. 95

Chateau Latour 2003 .... one of the absolute great Bordeaux over the past 100 years. As good as Haut Brion 89. Blew everything away 100

Chateau d'Yquem 2001 .... the legend, the one. Nup, prefer Climens haha. 93++

Hi Felix was it the regular vintage Charlemagne or the Mesnillesime? The latter is a great qpr for Le Mesnil.

Last night with corned beef, mashed potatoes, veges and a mustard white sauce we enjoyed a Craggy Range 2007 Block 14 Shiraz. From NZ a nice medium bodied wine with black fruits, modest oak with acid and tannins fully integrated. Not much complexity or excitement. OK but didn't float my boat. Drink up.

We had no Winter in Brisbane Australia !

2008 Potel-Aviron Morgon Côte du Py Vieilles Vignes. Very much true to the reputation that Morgon makes structured wines and Côte du Py even more so. Nice balance, but still noticeably tickly tannins and I'm thinking about picking a few more bottles up to see how it does in another decade.

it was the mesnillesime. bloody good drop!!!

Starting to clear the cellar, after the fall last week and 'found" an extra 6 pack of 99 Wynns Johnson's Shiraz.
This was a one off before the single vineyard program got under way...no Michael made that year...and not sure why.
Popped and poured, cork in great nick. Took about an hour to open but lovely fruits and savory tones, good mouth feel with drying lingering tannins.
Really lovely wine and probably at its peak. I remember the 99 vintage being a bit of a sleeper...white label Shiraz I had mid year was very good, and the JR of about a year or so ago, equally pleasant.
Interestingly, back label of the Johnson's was all in German...wonder if TWE or Wynns still exports to that market.

Rupestris is in a two decade window and Franco a bit tight. Be interested in your thoughts?

And it’s only EUR28 at CD! I bought a couple of cases of the 2008 but haven’t tried it yet
