1999 Grant Burge Holy Trinity - reasonable, but a touch too much confectionary characteristics for my palate;

2002 Turkey Flat Shiraz - this is the real deal, great fruit intensity and length, alcohol not overly notable. I'll be waiting until 2010 to take a look at the rest;

1998 St Hallet Third Century Shiraz - I understand this initial release was at a price and quality level above Old Block, but that has since been revised. Nevertheless, this is an excellent, balanced wine. Youthful chocoberry notes and has a long life in front of it.

2002 Cape Mentelle Cab Merlot - astringent and not my go.

I think he missed the boat on the Dead Arm and Run Rig also.

Guest,

Having just reread Oliver's Dead Arm review, I guess I must have missed the boat on this one too as I agree with the majority of what he has written about the 2002 wine. I'm interested to know why you think he's missed the boat and where your opinion differs from his. In terms of Run Rig, here is Oliver's tasting note.....

Sumptuous, concentrated and deeply spiced shiraz with meaty notes of treacle, licorice and currants. Clearly a hot year wine, itÂ’s both smooth and powerful, with a great depth and length of deeply ripened and slightly stewy raisin-like flavours. Viognier lends some attractive floral notes to its perfume, while the oak has a slightly varnishy aspect. 94 points, drink 2009-2013.

That also looks pretty reasonable and once again I would like to know where you think he's gone wrong.

JO has lost alot of following of late, too inconsistent.

I must confess I thought his review on the Run Rig was for the 02 not the 01 so thats my mistake and when i said the Dead Arm i was reffering to 89 points for the 01. Thats 5 points behind 02. I realise there has been much debate over which is better but 89 points {and 5 less than 02} is a joke. If he got a bad bottle he should have tried another. I respect that hes not in with any particuallar wineries. I was suspicious on his 97 points for the Jacaranda ridge so went and tried one and found it to be every bit as good as his review.

Cheers

Just on the Petaluma vs Moss Wood debate.

Moss Wood was a "1" for years and years and only slipped down in 2002 - JO clearly lost patience with them. I suspect the magnificent 2001 has made a lot of people forget that 1996-2000 wasn't a great time for MW CS.

Having said that, I think he may be a bit too lenient on Petaluma because of his former associations with Croser ...

JO re-reviewed every single vintage of Grange last year including upcoming releases 2000 (stinker), and 2001 (good)
