Help Me Identify and Rank Barossa Icon Shiraz to Buy
Re: Help Me Identify and Rank Barossa Icon Shiraz to Buy
This thread feels like groundhog day ... the forum is alive and well!
For me 1) Rockford BP 2) Mt Edelstone 3) Daylight ...
More about finesse and precision, these two tend to have that. I like the big guns from time - Hobbs Shiraz 2004 was awesome recently but I wouldn't drink too many.

I would add Sons Of Eden Remus Shiraz based on how much I enjoyed the 2010 (assuming EV is a sub-region of the BV)

Absolutely loved 2005 RWT. One of highlights from the Dan Murphy Shiraz expo in Mona Vale sometime back ( it was held either 2008 or 2009) along with torbreck Factor 2005.
My father's got a bottle of 2001, might be past it's peak?

Re: Help Me Identify and Rank Barossa Icon Shiraz to Buy
Thanks for everyone’s contributions. I am now trying to formulate the nominations into a couple of listings, under ‘Icons’, ‘Potential Icons’ and ‘Not Sure’.
Feel free to disagree and suggest upgradings or downgradings. Or if I have missed a wine out that you think demands inclusion, feel free….
ICONS In no particular order, except perhaps the first two
Rockford BP
Henschke Mt Edelstone
Lehmann Stonewell
The Standish
Kalleske Johann Georg
Langmeil Freedom
St Hallets Old Block
Burge Meshach
Penfolds RWT
Duval Eligo
POTENTIAL ICONS
Sami Odi
Ruggabellus
Teusner FG
Eperosa
Sons of Eden Romulus and Remus
Head various
AMON-Ra
Elderton Command
Turkey Flat
Dutschke Oscar Semmler
Kaesler Old Bastard
Hobbs Gregor
Saltram No1
Schuburt Gooseyard
Torbreck The Factor
NOT SURE
Greenock Creek – many reports of saltiness and excessively high alcohol make me wary of inclusion although others I notice love the winery
Penfolds 170 – good wine but needs a deeper profile. Only two vintages released so far. I do concede this comment does apply to some wines in the previous category though.
Once we have a more or less list of icons we might run a poll to see what the most popular ones are, besides Rockford and Mt Ed.

What about Torbreck Laird?
Its from arguably, the best vineyard in Barossa, Malcolm Seppelts Gnadenfrei.

Not doubting that. I would love to fill my cellar with The Laird, but can't afford to do so.
We are compiling a list of wine at a cutoff level of about $100 as has been previously stated
One or two wines will nudge just above that level - like Mt Ed, but it so popular that there will be a mutiny if not included.

The three I buy when possible, though only at sensible prices:
Mount Edelstone;
Rockford BP;
Peter Lehmann Stonewell.

Re: Help Me Identify and Rank Barossa Icon Shiraz to Buy
People keep mentioning Rockford BP but no-one has mentioned Rockford Black Sparkling Shiraz. Just knocking off a 2012 disgorged Rockford Black now and am thinking it's as good as anything I've drunk this year (except perhaps the 96 Dom). Certainly enjoying it as much as any "Exceptionals" I've had this year and as good as any of the Rockford BP's or SVS's had at GPK's.
Big call I know but try it at about 10 degrees after 20 minutes in glass....... Stunning

Hey Hacker,
If $100 is the max, then you will need to remove Torbreck Factor, Meshach, Hobbs, Old Bastard and RWT.
We are getting there.

I know...
Things are getting exxe. Not sure just where to rule the ledger off Factor still scrapes in I think but not sure about the others. Sometimes there are very good deals about as you know on the RB forum.

Having read the latest Standish Wines mailing list newsletter I'd be putting them on the 'to buy' list.

If you are a subscriber to Winefront, you should read Mike Bennie's reviews of them.

Unfortunately I'm not a subscriber. Favourable reviews I'm assuming?

Yes, especially the Standish shiraz.
A subscription is well worth the money.

I'd just point out that a year's subscription to Winefront costs less than half the RRP of a single bottle of the Standish. And it could well give a great deal more pleasure over the course of the year, especially when you take into account the lively and informative comments section.

Used to be wonderful wines but wasn't impressed with offerings at CD a year or so ago.

Rockfords Basket Press
Kalleske Greenock Shiraz
Greenock Creek Alices
Kaeslers The Bogan
Yelland and Papps Divine Shiraz
As for Wendouree, I would choose any one of these over that.

I just don't know about that. A 1990 Wendouree Cab Malbec was magical at an offline last year, really a memorable wine, and me, a Barossa slut is saying that. I think Wendouree adds light and shade* to a collection, or compliments a cellar rather than being chosen above or below other particular wines from another region. On a given day I love Rockford, on another, Wendouree. What choices!!

Re: Help Me Identify and Rank Barossa Icon Shiraz to Buy
I continue to be impressed with St Johns Rd Blood and Courage shiraz.
Made by Peter Schell at Spinifex from an old non-irrigated vineyard near Greenock I believe.
Have had the 2012 3 or 4 times now...very very good for around the $20 mark.
The 2009 and 2010 were also pretty good.
Cheers
Craig.

The only Black Pepper I have is the 2002. last bottle I had a few years back was massive. I will try the next one again in a couple of years to see if it takes on any degree of complexity.
