Got a story for ya's.
I went into a bottle shop who i will not name and asked for prices on four bottles.
This is how it went.
The shop was busy, it was a Friday night.
"How much for these four bottles please" I asked.
"I have to ring them up to check" He replied.
"No sweat"
"Ok" he said "$280, $120, $99 and thast looks like it might be the margret river red, so $24.99"
"How many of those Margret river reds do you have" I enquired cautiously.
"Dunno, let's go have a look".
Down the back of the shop we went to find seven bottles. "I'll take the lot thanks mate". I said as calmly as i could.
And that is how i picked up seven bottles of Cullens 'Diana Madeline' for under $175
I went back five days later and asked the bottleshop manager what he was doing with the wines out the back and he said he wanted to get rid of them.
I negotiated on the spot and walked out wth 3 2005 Penfold cellar reserve cabernets and 3 penfolds cellar reserve cab/shiraz for $100ea.
Today i went back after negotiating with the new bottle shop manager and walked out with 7 (2001) Woodlands Cab, 4 (2004) Woodlands Cab, 5 (2005) Moss Wood Cab and 3 (05) Shingleback D Block Cab for a nice price too.
Just need some more space on the credit card so i can go back and finish the shopping...

Still more than the going rate in New Zealand
Nice work though

My local has them for $89 which at todays e/r is $67 AU??
Not so simple, we earn NZ$ and spend NZ$, but if you are earning AU$ and shopping here then it is rather cheap!

I have to wait until next month on the credit card before I can afford to get my Rockfords. Been a mean year on the wine buying but I was probably due for one

Because they are cheaper in NZ ... or just too expensive in general?
Some notable overseas critics - with good palates if you read the wines they like - gave the 2005 Cab Shiraz an absolute rave, Neil Beckett (editor of World of Fine Wines magazine) in the RoP tastings bracketed it along the Block 42 2004 as "superlative" with Josh Green, Editor of Wines & Spirits not far behind. Julia Sevenich, a leading Swiss wine writer also rated it above the 1996 and 2004 Granges with a ranking (for her) up with First Growths.

tried both the can and cab shiraz 05's. I much prefered the cab. And I agree vs first growths, that is what it reminded me of

A case of 2000 Bowen Estate Coonawara Shiraz just arrived at the door.
My drink it now stuff was running a bit low.
I know it sounds like a dumb statement, but sometimes the stuff in the cellar takes too long to be ready to drink. Not that i would have it any other way, but i've only been collecting for four years and nothing is at its peak yet.

store a couple of weeks back ;o)

You've got some good drinking coming your way. They're not monsters, but will do well with significant cellar time...

I would if i didn't wan't to grab the last of the Woodland 04 Cabernet (Rachael). I just have to grab a night free to decant and taste it to make sure it is good.
They have seven left at $85.
But i do have to say i've picked the guts out of it.
(I grabbed all the Bethany).

It is so hard keeping the wallet closed here at the moment. Just some really good deals. 08 Church Rd Reserve Chardonnay Air NZ overall trophy winner $23.99 at the yellow supermarket. The 08 res Merlot Cab same price. resisted the red this time but been wanting to try the chardonnay so allowed myself to slip a bvottle in with the groceries....doesnt count as a wine purchase then???

3*10 Alicante Bouchet to round out the dozen (and because I love it)

2*07 OH&OP Shiraz
2*07 Rosehill Shiraz
And I'm trying to source some 02 Dom Perignon preferably with the warhol packaging as I like to mix my art and wine - my two passions.
Well, that lot has all arrived (except the Doms which are proving difficult to get) as well as another six pack of 05 Voyager Estate Cab Merlot that a mate bought for me while I was overseas.
On top of that I've just ordered:
3 x 2009 Clonakilla SV
3 x 2009 Clonakilla O'Riada
6 x 2009 Clonakilla Hilltops
3 x 2009 Noon Reserve Shiraz
3 x 2009 Noon Reserve Cab Sav
5 x 2009 Noon Twelve Bells
1 x NV Noon Tawny Port
Still to get in my Wild Duck Creek order too. Been too busy at work to find the order form and ring up and see what's left - if anything.

I just think that if they are selling them to the Kiwi's that cheap (even allowing for the exchange rate & different tax levels), why can't they sell it to their bread and butter market (Australia) at the same price. I did taste the 2005 cellar reserve wines at the cellar door late last year and I agree, they are exceptional. But they wanted $200 a bottle. To my way of thinking that is a little overpriced. Even more so when you find out they are $89NZ in Kiwi land.
It just seems that Penfolds are taking the piss out of us honest Aussies!

Some ins and outs, all via auction.
Out
-5 x Penfolds Grange 1990 - nice but not enough occasions in life for this kind of wine.
-6 x Rockford Basket Press 2002 - nice but ex-y there are better vintages.
-2 x Noons Reserve Shiraz 2004 - not for me, and ex-y
In
I have both these wines but hard to pass up especially on the 2002 which is like hens-teeth to obtain.
+6 x Seppelts St Peters Shiraz 2002 (legendary wine, 500 cases, bit like Clonakilla SV 2007).
+6 x Seppelts St Peters Shiraz 2003 (not far off the wine above).
So 13 wines out I will never drink or find hard to get an occasion for, 12 in I'd happily drink with a good meal any time.
Cheers - Jay

PIcked up another half Dozen Rachael tonight and i just can't justify spending anymore money on wine at the moment.
I'm bursting at the seams.

Wine marketing rule #1: if the customer will pay more, then charge them more.
Wine marketing rule #2: supply less than the demand in order to make rule #1 work

At the Champagne tasting went a bit wild. I can only be thankful that my girlfriend does not read these posts!
6*NV Moet
6* NV Laurent Perrier
6*NV Piper Heidsieck
2*02 Veuve Clicquot
4*07 Seppelt Silverband Sparkling Shiraz
2*07 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay
1*09 Kalleske Clarrys (taster)
12*cleanskin dry white (for cooking – sometimes I even put it in the food)
And a case of Monteith’s Raddler – I love this beer and it’s great over summer.
Should be right for champagne for summer now.
