BYO Restaurant Resource

Post by BenK »

After browsing this forum for a LONG time I have come to the view that we need a favourite BYO Restauarnt resource.

As such, I'll start with Sydney

Pello (East Sydney) - midweek - Mod Oz - cheap corkage
Paradox (Crows Nest) - every night - French - no corkage
Le Bich (Balmain) - every night - Vietnamese - no corkage

Any other national contributions would be much appreciated.

Favourite fish and chips from Seacow in Darlinghurst (at least it was 3 months ago!). They dook salmon to perfection and do a salt and pepper squid even my 8yr old son can't turn down. $17 average and great to just relax outside. Very informal. No corkage!

All in Melbourne!

Moretons Brasserie (166 Rathdowne St, Carlton), basic french food, good service, free corkage.
France Soir (11 Toorak Road, South Yarra), good french bistro food, though recent form has dipped. Very good winelist as well, $10 corkage per bottle.
Matteo's (533 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy), modern, solid no thrill european food, good ambience, $15 corkage per bottle.
Pacific House (240 Vicotria street Richmond, or 210 Toorak Road South Yarra), good cheap catonese cuisine, decent glassware as well, minimal corkage.
Asiana(181 Victoria Ave, Albert Park), good cult wine list, modern catonese cuisine with a twist which is not to my liking.
Vue de Monde (295 Drummond Street, Carlton), modern french food, most people go for the degustation menu which can be excellent when Shannon is in the mood. $50 corkage per bottle (ask beforehand).
Zio's Ristorante (14 Landsowne Street), Italian food, maybe the best in melbourne after cafe di stasio, corkage $7.50 per bottle.
La Luna (320 Rathdowne Street), used to be my favorite place for steak, but haven't try it since they changed ownership.

Places to avoid include Arc Cafe, Da Noi, and Paris Go.

For the Sydneysiders:

Been to Rocket (Chatswood) - good.
Been to Garfish (Kirribilli) - very good, especially if serving whites.

My favourite is Atelier in Newtown.

Fingerss,

Yes I agree with you that Rocksalt is an excellent restaurant for foods, great wine list and service. I find them very helpful and friendly. Another excellent one I can recommend is Chairman & Yip. :D

I haven't tried Anise and Aubergine thus can't comment on them.

Great idea.

I can recommend Rocket as a Chatswood local.

Jaspers at Hunters hill charges corkage but at least you can BYO.

check out entertainment guides for dinning discounts and call before you book if you wish to BYO.

In Adelaide:

The Grange Restaurant; $20 corkage but who cares when you can enjoy an old Grange with some wonderful food.

The Manse (tonight); again $20 corkage for a very special Penfolds 1990 St Henri.

Cetainly better than paying $100+ for a current vintage wine that needs more time in the bottle.

Something a little different - at the Bridgewater Mill (Petaluma cellar door) you can enjoy the wine with exceptional food at bottle shop prices so no need to BYO.

Balzac in Randwick is a favourite, although no BYO on Friday or Saturday.

Claude's is another top est that is happy to do BYO.

Rockpool do BYO, they don't advertise this, for $20 per bottle.

I went to Anise in Canberra last week. It was great, I can recommend.
