January 2012 purchases
January 2012 purchases
DOH - title fixed, 2012.
Did any one start a similar thread or are we all still in recovery mode?
I was pretty good in December but a few bargains have made me buy up again.
3 x Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 1990
12 x Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1 Cabernet 1997
1 Mag x Rockford Basket Press 1997
3 x Stonyridge Larose 1999
Drinking the Underhill 1990 now and it's a cracking drop, totally belies it's age.
Cheers - Jay

Re: January 2011 purchases
I am in buying mode to replace the holes in the cellar made by the Dec drinking mode!!
A quick trip to Mclaren vale at the end of xmas for some buys at D'arenberg, Coriole and Alpha Box & Dice. If you haven't heard of the last, it was a new one for me, its well worth checking out some very interesting wine making and alternative varieties.
Also just joined Tyrrell's "Private Bin" Club so 3x Vat 47 2011 and 3x Vat 1 2011. Can't wait to drink the latter... in about 10yrs.

Surely January 2012? Is this a case of "Chinese man still writing 'monkey' on cheques"?
I just got back from NZ - a trip which included my first-ever visit to Martinborough and the Hawke's Bay (incidentally, if you ever get the chance have lunch at Craggy Range; all claims made on its behalf are justified).
Could only get a few bottles back to Australia duty free so went for:
- 2010 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir (I'm amassing a formidable collection of this fabulous wine, one or two bottles at a time).
- 2009 Ata Rangi Celebre
- 2007 Te Mata Coleraine
- 2006 Schubert Cabernet Merlot
Also had a quick run up to the Hunter just after new year, added to the fruits of the Meerea Park dinner (in December, but only got them home this month):
- 2x 2003 Meerea Park Alexander Munro Shiraz
- 2006 Meerea Park Alexander Munro Semillon
- 2006 Meerea Park Terracotta Semillon
- 2009 Pepper Tree Pebbles Shiraz Viognier
Finally one from Santa's sack and another from a brief trip to the Swan Valley for lunch while in Perth at Christmas:
- 2009 Sandalford Prendiville Reserve Shiraz
- 2008 Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz

Re: January 2011 purchases
New Year's resolution, coupled with an over-full cellar, is to exercise some restraint on wine purchases, so have managed trips in the New Year to both Martinborough & Hawkes Bay without buying anything. Have however bought:
12 x 2009 Alluviale, on the basis that none of the 2010 - 2012 HB vintages are looking like they'll be too flash, & that (Awatea aside) my '09 HB purchases to date have mainly been at the higher cost end of the spectrum. (I'll also look to pick up some '09 Church Road Cab Merlot Reserve when I see it on special, & am interested in any other ideas for QPR HB '09 reds.)
6 x 2007 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese at a good price at auction.
2 x 2007 Quartz Reef Bendigo Block Pinot Noir in magnum, on basis that it's an excellent wine, they don't charge a premium for magnums (these were in fact at a discount to 2 x the single bottle price), & I'd like just a few more magnums in the cellar for special occasions.
Cheers
Peter

So, did you visit Vilmart, one of my favourite producers, and favourite spots for a visit, tour and tasting?
Go on, make me jealous!

Hi Gavin,
We didn't bother with the tour having been there before, but did taste the range (and bought their last ever bottles of Cuvee Creation). I agree, it's a great house. Alongside Cedric Bouchard & Pierre Peters, it's one of my absolute favourites.
Cheers

I am really intrigued by 2005 SVS. I was at the winery yesterday, the hoffmann vineyard has been sold as has Moorooroo ??
One was this a sole export to switzerland where you are and made before the vineyards were sold and 2 the next 2 svs to be releases in SA are from the 04 vintage........
Or seeing that this is your first post... are you for real???!!!

Roman, no offence intended, but we get a few...shall i say tossers on this forum from time to time...Gavin is pretty tolerant but knows that there are a few about.
the reason why i doubted your post was largely its content, and your post history (first post and you land a big fish like that!)...but in the context of intrigue and being well ahead of the game in terms of being able to access wines of the quality of an SVS...that we in Australia can't always seem to get....well done
i am aware that there are 2 2004 svs to come out in SA in the next couple of months ( well thats what they told me on wednesday at the winery) and obviously from your photo and the one on the shop's website...people who live in Switerland get the wines via exports before we do here in Australia...which is a bit sad... but at the end of the day Rockford probably doesn't care where they sell their wines.
Going on what the winery said, the 04 and indeed the 05 Hoffmanns could be the last in view of the vineyard being sold...but it may have only been sold recently which maight indicate that there could be another 4-5 Hoffmanns to come.
BTW what in $AUD does an SVS cost over there?
Keep us all posted...there are a lot of Rockford fans on this forum.
Thanks Craig.

Re: January 2012 purchases
I don't really understand... Rockford are the most protective of where they sell their wines supposedly to protect availability for loyal supporters (no online for non-members, virtually no retail outlets outside of SA, have to go to the cellar door to secure Basket Press unless your a member, even then a max of 3 bottles, etc etc etc) ... yet they export their top Shiraz only to SWITZERLAND and don't offer it at all in Aus? Starts to get a bit irritating.

Ps Roman I don't mean any offence to Switzerland by capitalising it, just emphasising of all the global markets its a left field choice!!

This is a bit unfair IMO.
I believe all the 1998 Hoffmann went overseas because a Major Shareholder (Part Owner?) ordered the lot.
If the "Boss" or a Major Partner orders wine then they would get preference and if they take the lot, not much you can do about it.
Cheers
Phill
Drink the wine, not the label.
Re: January 2012 purchases
If they own enough to be able to require those running the business to do as they say, then they should also own enough to realise if the strategy is to protect loyal customers, then buying up all the stock for themselves is hardly a good way to drive business & hence make profits which would surely be the reason for owning the winery? If they own it just to get the wine they may as well shut the business and just produce wine exclusively for themselves!
In either case, the grievance is with "Rockford Inc" not the wine maker/cellar door manager/etc person who had no choice but do as told by the boss.

The exchange rate is about 1:1 so by the price on the website thats AU$50.
I purchased some from Germany last year- a 99 and 2 x 2000 SVS Hoffmanns. They were about 75 Euro each.
I had them mailed to relatives in Europe and had family collect them on a planned trip.

Re: January 2012 purchases
Also, I had a conversation with Graeme B, who posts here every now and then. Following a trip to the Barossa he said he went to Rockford and they said the SVS was made up until 2006 and no more after that. Shame really, because it is one of my favorites.

Sorry Rens, just come out of a meeting and looked at this post, what website?
The 96 SVS were AUD$65 and the last release, 03 was 85-90 Australian... so an SVS at 50 Australian is very good.
I am going to the UK in Sept and are wondering if there is any way a wine merchant or somebody there could assist in getting some of these hard to get SVS's
Sorry Gavin, that I have inadvertently hijacked the Jan. buying post...but its clear that its more than just me who is interested in this.
Cheers Craig.

Re: January 2012 purchases
Thanks Rens...so a decade of SVS 96-06, I have lost count but 3x 96, 1x97, 3x98, ?? 2 99's, and dont remember how many from 00-03.
lets say their might be a dozen to 18 bottles in a set.
Can see this being a hot auction item in the future.
Cheers Craig.

In order as not to offend our host. If you went to wine searcher with the info I've given, it should be easy enough to find.

More Yarra Yering.
The second bottle of Underhill 1990 I tried from my initial purchase was even better than the TN I did - one of the best Shiraz I have had, and perfectly resolved.
12 x Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz 1990
2 x Yarra Yering Dry Red No 2 Shiraz 1997
1 x Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1 Cabernet 1996
