November 2011 - what have you bought?

Post by Jay60A »

To start us rolling, another classic wine but one which I have yet to try this vintage -

6 x Seppelts St. Peters GW Shiraz 1998

I have tried the GW Reserve 1998 - the fruit quality was evident, alas so was the oak.
I have 1998-2005 in the cellar, missing only 1999 for some reason, and also drunk my 1997 and 1991s ... hope it hits the 1997-2004 quality peak again.

Jay, you will be very happy with the Sepps 98s that you purchased. I bought a dozen on release, and another 12 at auction. Seriously underrated, as is the Benno and Mt Ida.
Have a 6 pack of 97 and 98 reserve, they really need to revive this label.

These wines for me are some of the best representations of Shiraz, anywhere, and quite undervalued.
You will enjoy them.
Craig.

I have just sent my last few 98 GW Reserve shiraz to Langtons.
Too much oak, and boring drinking for me.
The standard 98 is better.

Just ordered a mixed dozen of grower Champagne.
Still haven't put in a Rockford order for the year - I wonder if there is any money left in the year's wine budget :?

Brucer, i note with interest that many comment that the 98 GW Reserve is like drinking an oak tree, but i must have a palate like a horse's arse. perhaps i must love oak or don't pick it up very well.
I will have a bottle next week and report back.

Purchase:
5x09 Noons shiraz.

SJW, there are four possibilities I can think of, and possibly more;

1.) The bottles of Leasingham you have purchased our extremely rare;
2.) They are counterfeit;
3.) They are the Bin 56; or
4.) They are shiraz.

Of these 4 options, I tend to favour option 3.

Cheers,
Orpheus.

Managed to obtain a paltry single bottle of St Henri '98, having drunk previous far too early. And also bought one (should be more than enough) Dead Arm '04.

2009 Janasse Vieilles Vignes CndP
2009 Janasse Chaupin CndP

(And yes, having equivocated on these for a while, my buy decision was indeed triggered by the latest Parker reviews.)

2010 Felton Road Block 5
2010 Felton Road Block 2 Chard
2011 Felton Roade Block 1 Riesling

2008 Escarpment Kupe Chard (a favourite, & got these cheap at auction).

Bargain Champagne season in full swing over here. Lanson Black Label £15/bottle, rosé £20. The former will be tucked away for a couple+ years, after which it will have transformed from an ugly duckling....

With respect to Gavin, I am not keen on saying, as this forum is run by an etailer.

Mike,
Its a single site wine, like the Light Pass. It sold for $80, like the others, but I bought it on a deal on the internet for $40. Half price.
I have not tried it. They call it Bartholomaeus. James Halliday rates it 96 on the website, and 97 in his Australian Top 100 wines.

this is only the second dip into this area - six bottles earlier in the year with a conclusion the worst bottle was as good as Veuve Cliquot.

Thanks David. I've had a few of those before. Actually, I just took a bottle each of the Lassaigne and the Laherte Freres out of the cellar and into the fridge along with the few. I was with Andrew Jordan (another board member) at Vergnon last year sitting in the waiting / reception room. He didn't speak English, we speak very little French, so it was a rather quiet tasting...

Enjoy

6 Pack of 2005 Hatton Estate Tahi. The $25 Caro special down from $70. Drank one on Sat night. Awesome wine, still very primary. Lovely ripeness and texture for a 78% Cabernet blend. Shame another promising Hawkes Bay winery down the drain. Hoping that other vintages come on the market at a good price. You have to be quick!

It's that time of year for Christmas mailings to be assaulting the letterbox and the inbox. I've succumbed (not all from mailings, I might add):

4 x Ashbrook 2009 Chardonnay
4 x Ashbrook Chardonnay 2010
4 x Ashbrook Cabernet Merlot 2007
6 x Capel Vale Petit Verdot 2008
6 x Capel Vale MR Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
12 x Capel Vale Pemberton Chardonnay 2010
4 x Capel Vale Whispering Hill Shiraz 2009
6 x Capel Vale Whispering Hill Riesling 2011
3 x Capel Vale Riesling 2011 (earlier drinking model)
6 x Skillogalee Clare Valley Riesling
8 x Hoddles Creek 2010 Chardonnay
4 x Hoddles Creek 2010 Pinot Noir
12 x Old Kent River Chardonnay 2008
12 x Old Kent River Pinot Noir 2009
6 x Cosham Chardonnay 2005 (a regular purchase)
6 x Brookside Vineyard Rose 2011

There's more, but this is all I can think of without visiting the cellar.

Cheers

Allan
